Susan:

Respecting Open Letters, as well as A Fine Point, and other comment portals, the following comes to mind. BTW, I believe I might have mentioned something along these lines previously, not certain though.

I've noticed something of a "give and take" developing at some of these discussions, or comments on a P-G Editorial or a published Letter to Editor, cartoons too.. I plead guilty to having contributed something to the discussions or static, as some might describe it.

In any event, I partake, from time to time, of other discussion sites, having "registered" thereon, as I've done at the P-G, providing a user name and email address, and I've indicated, when asked, that I would like to receive notification of responses to comments I've offered. I would do the same, if asked, with P-G discussions, however when I registered, I don't recall any such question being asked, which means that one might miss interesting rebuttals or responses.

So, I submit that the P-G's discussions should also include email notifications to commentators, regarding responses/rebuttals to whatever it might be that they had offered in the way of comment. I do not think that doing this would present any significant technical problems. Of course, in the event that a poster had indicated that they did not wish to receive notice of responses, their expressed wishes should be respected. Providing this sort of notification could serve to "enliven" discussions, I think, which I note appear to have been and remain well within the bounds of "polite conversation".

Of course, whether or not the P-G chooses to take up my suggestion is up to people at the P-G. I do think that doing so would, as above noted, serve to "enliven" conversations.

Is everybody shy?  OK, I think you're doing a first rate job and I love this new feature.  There's no way I can keep my big mouth shut for 90 days as required by the PG policy.  With Harrisburg and other pols daily providing new material the Open Letters is the best idea the PG has had since Lio (which probably says something about me).  Thanks.
