My Bio

I am Ced Kurtz, also known as TechMan, an editor at the Post-Gazette for more than 20 years. Although not formally trained in computer science, I have had a personal interest in computers since the early 1980s. I first worked on TRS 80s and have been on the installation team for four newspaper computer systems. When the PG was looking for someone to take over the TechMan column, I suggested doing the column from the point of view of the everyday technology user. I have tried to write my column and blog so that it can be understood by technology non-professionals.

Being sort of old fashioned, I firmly believe in If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It, and then there is The Kiss Principle (Keep It Simple Stupid), I find myself rather curious about Ced's reference to "it's operating system upgrade season".

One has brand X computer, with OS WXYZ, both of which serve their owners needs adequately. Why on earth, given the mentioned situation,, would anyone want or should I say "need" to upgrade their operating system?

What time zone clock is this site using? I'm posting this at 8:27 am. I see the time listed for my posts are way off. UTC?

I see you haven't entered a bio. I'd be interested in knowing a bit of your background. You just seemed to appear out of nowhere. Were you in the IT industry? Were you always a tech journalist? Have you always lived in Pittsburgh? Don't care about your personal life, e.g. wife and kids etc.

I enjoy your column, usually  check the PG site every day to see if you've written a new column.

Great column. I've learned a few things here.
