Are you concerned about emissions from the Imperial Landfill in Findlay?

Findlay residents along with teachers from Wilson Elementary School in Findlay are concerned about bad odors and gas emissions from the Imperial Landfill. The landfill was inspected and will be cited for a malfunctioning gas collection system and other violations of air quality and operational permits. Are you concerned? [Read PG story.]

Yes, as a family, we are very concerned about the emissions at the landfill. My husband has a life-threatening lung disease and is on the lung transplant list at UPMC. The air he breathes is critical to his health. We are long-time residents of Imperial. There is  no reason why anyone, including our family, should have to be concerned about clean air, as this is a basic expectation that the air we breathe should be clean. Whatever needs to be done to take care of this issue needs to be done, and done quickly. Not only for us as a family, but for the entire community, and most especially, the young children who go to Wilson Elementary School. Adults have the responsibility to assure that these young children have the best environment in which to learn.

Yes! I am extremely concerned about the landfill emissions. The gases are toxic and unsafe! Allied Waste admitted to not operating efficiently and inspecting their gas collecting systems correctly. Ineffeciency is unacceptable! Children are still developing and are being exposed to carcinigins through our air. The Health department even claims they do not know what this is doing to them , or those of us breathing it in daily. FIND OUT WHAT IT DOES! Buy out the residents who can't move and relocate the school! Report after report shows toxic gases, why hasn't something been done? ALlied Waste can report they are fixing it, but how can we ever be positive this is occurring? Methane, in large quantites, escapes inour air periodically. Did you know this? If you have  weak heart condition, or other unknown health problem, methane can cause a heart attack. I should know! Methane has also been linked to bladder cancer. IT IS NOT SAFE, nor is anything else emitting from the dump. GREEN OUR AIR!

Clean the air, don't cover it up!  I have not gotten a straight answer to "What am I smelling?"  Are the agencies involved that inept?  Incompetence is not an excuse in this volitile situation.  Who can help decipher what is being emitted by Allied Waste?

Re: Are you concerned about emissions from the Imperial Landfill in Findlay?

Yes I'm concerned. Having attended the West Allegheny School Board meeting and the Findlay Twp. meeting, I'm seeing a pattern of non-action, cover up and apathy on the part of local officals for years.  It is time for action. A plan has to be developed and the Landfill must comply. They have lost there ability to object because of their admitted negligence. Permits have to be denied until they do the right thing. The community is now in the drivers seat but we must act quickly to get what we need. Since they have repeatedly put us and especially our children at risk, they have to "show us the money"

They are attempting to put a band-aid on a broken limb.

I think purchasing the surrounding properties by the landfill and providing funding to move the school is not too much to ask. We the people are the ones who have the say and what is more important than our children? If the landfill site would not be approved today because of the proximity to the school, why should we allow it to be "grandfathered" in? I'm a grandfather and no grandfather would allow his grandchildren to put up with this if he had a choice. Let's not wait more years to hear more excuses!

There is a community meeting today, Wed. March 25th at the Findlay activity center. We will be discussing how the landfill odors are being addressed. Their goal is to have no odors. Isn't that a stipulation of their permit? They HAVE to have no odors. Not to mention it's not only the odors we are concerned with. There are dangerous toxins in the air, whether we can smell them or not! We need bigger people involved- those with a voice! Oprah, State Senators, the President! Allied Waste has been getting away with this for years. I have articles upon articles about citations and violations. Nothing has ever been rectified. We're demanding it now!

Yes! I am very concerned! I am tired of excuses from the landfill representatives! They are obviously not capable of fixing the problem or it would have been fixed by now.  This has been going on for 30 years! Something needs to be done.  I agree with the post that recommended they purchase the surrounding properties and allow us to move to a safe environment.

     NOT SAFE!!!!http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/child/atsdrpage2.html

    http://www.healthfinder.gov/orgs/HR2587.htm

    Children and Parents
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has put special emphasis on children in conducting its health studies and other activities.  Children are especially at risk of being exposed to hazardous substances from waste sites or accidental spills and of suffering adverse health effects from their exposure.   They typically play in mud, splash in creeks, crawl on floors, roll in dirt-activities that put them at higher risk of exposure to hazardous substances that may be in water or soil.  Their height puts them at a level where they are  more likely to be exposed to breathing dust and heavy vapors that are close to the ground.  They may ingest hazardous substances if they put their hands in their mouths, or eat food in a contaminated area.

Their small body size and developing systems also place them at greater risk than adults.  Because they are smaller they receive higher doses of toxicants per pound of body weight.  Pound for pound of body weight, children drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air than adults do.  Many organ systems in young children, such as the nervous system and the lungs, are undergoing rapid growth and development in the first years of life.  These systems are especially vulnerable to injury during these periods of development.  And, of special concern is exposure of the fetus, whose organ and body systems are still developing.

Even teenagers can be at risk, as some may ignore warning signs and venture into contaminated areas.  For example and exposure investigation conducted in FY 1998 found that 30 teenagers in Texarkana, Arkansas, had elevated levels of mercury after being exposed to elemental mercury taken from an abandoned factory.

ATSDR estimates about 3 million children younger than 18 years old live within 1 mile of a National Priorities List (NPL) hazardous waste site.  ATSDR has conducted numerous health studies and other activities that have sought to learn more about the potential health effects children who live near hazardous waste sites may experience, how they may be exposed, and effective ways to prevent their exposure.

ATSDR has conducted studies that have assessed whether the infants of mothers who live near hazardous waste sites face a higher risk of having various birth defects or adverse health outcomes such as small for gestational age.  While some of these studies have assessed single sites, where populations were small, several have looked at larger studies in California, New York, and New Jersey.  These large health studies have found an increased risk for neural tube defects.  Some studies also showed an increased risk for musculoskeletal defects and heart defects.

http://www.healthfinder.gov/orgs/HR2587.htm We need to petition the CDC to investigate what else can be done for our children!!!

Re: Are you concerned about emissions from the Imperial Landfill in Findlay?

The smell this Mon., March 30th was horrendous, inside Wilson Elementary School and outside. So far we have discovered the results from April and May 2008 had 2 gases above OSHA limits. We are waiting for the current results to see if this year there are more and if they are higher. My classroom has had levels of benzene, hydrogen sulfide and other gases tested. I am waiting on those results from the Health Dept. I have been getting the run around. They take 2 days to analyze and it's been a month. Bruce Dixon will not return my phone calls to find out where the results are. John Jeffries has never seen the results. As soon as I get them I will pass along the info. GASP is working on doing a risk analysis for the school and community.
On Feb. 26th, the ACHD detected methane levels of 8,000 ppm. The limit is 500 ppm. That is on record with the Health Dept. We are requesting the EPA monitor the situation as they are doing in Stowe-Rox.
It looks as if the next citizens advisory committee meeting will be Wed. April 8th. The time and location is tbd. I will let you know as soon as I know. The West Allegheny School Board meeting will be held April 15th at 7:30 at Donaldson elementary. Many concerned parents and citizens will be attending to voice their opinions about moving Wilson Elementary School.
Any concerned citizens who believe they have health related problems due to landfill emissions should contact Dave at 412-722-9261. They will be meeting on Tuesday, I believe with a lawyer to discuss options.

THE AIR STINKS!!! We are sick of putting up with this smell. Every day this week, we had a stench in the building and outside.

NO MORE EXCUSES. Fix it. Period.

A concerned group of parents met tonnight and have begun to seek legal expertise!  Wilson elementary still stinks everyday and ACHD and the DEP are USELESS!  Maybe the attorney will light a fire under their asses to get us the TEST RESULTS that we deserve as a community and for the safety of our children.

    SHUT DOWN THE DUMP!!!!

Still no results! Cover up-much? It's our right to know! The DEP results are NON-CONCLUSIVE to determining health risks. Good news- we now know the dump was actually causing the odors. Shocked??? It took 3 days of testing to determine this. Benzene, methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide levels are unacceptable and dangerous. No ACHD and DEP, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out but I did. Why can't you determine it's unsafe? DO YOUR JOBS!

EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LET THE DEP AND EVERYONE ELSE DO THE JOB THEY NEED TO. WE ALL BOUGHT OUR HOMES KNOWING THAT THE LANDFILL WAS HERE AND NOW WE HAVE THE NERVE TO COMPLAIN. MY KIDS ARE NOW 20 & 22 NO HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT GOD, BUT YOU WANT THE LANDFILL TO BE SHUT DOWN WHAT WILL ALL THOSE PEOPLE DO FOR JOBS. DON'T YOU THINK THIS COUNTRY IS IN A BIG ENOUGH MESS. WE ALL KNOW THAT THE LANDFILL HAS BEEN HERE LONGER THEN THE SCHOOL. I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY ANYMORE IN PROPERTY TAXES SO CLOSE THE LANDFILL AND I'LL COME DOOR TO DOOR FOR HELP PAYING THE TAXES. INSTEAD OF HIRING A LAWYER TO "SCARE" THE OWNERS OF THE LANDFILL WHY NOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT CAN OR WHAT IS GOING TO BE DONE. NOW AFTER 30 YEARS AND SVERAL DO GOODERS LATER YOU WANT THEM SHUT DOWN, BUT AS LONG AS YOUR TAXES ARE NOT SKY HIGH THE LAND FILL IS OK. DO ANY OF YOU KNOW THE SAVING WE HAVE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE LANDFILL IS HERE. BEFORE JUMPING THE GUN WITH LAWYERS AND GOD KNOWS WHO ELSE, WHY NOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS.  BY THE WAY WHEN ANY OF YOU WERE LOOKING FOR A HOUSE DID YOU NOT SMELL THE LANDFILL THEN? ANY WAY WHY SHOULD THEY BUY EVERYONE OUT? WE ALL KNEW THE LANDFILL WAS HERE, SO NOW YOU WANT THEM TO BUY YOU OUT. THE SMELL WILL STILL BE THERE. GET A GRIP PEOPLE! FIND ANOTHER CAUSE TO FIGHT! I HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER AND I AM JUST FINE. WHY MAKE A BIGGER PROBLEM FOR THEM AND US? I CAN'T AFFORD NOT TO HAVE THE LANDFILL HERE. SO LET THEM BUY US OUT, WE SEE HOW WELL THAT WORKED OUT IN MOON TWP!

Re: Are you concerned about emissions from the Imperial Landfill in Findlay?

Then why did you? And if you would have done your homework as I have, the landfill was here long before the school only at a different site. As far as your builders, shame on they for not knowing. I have been here for a very long time, and yes I sleep just fine. I feel if there were serious health concerns they would have been shut down. What about the people that are employed there? No one seems to care about them? What about the health concerns for them? All I am saying before EVERYONE jumps the gun on this, why not wait to see what the DEP has to say. If you are really concerned residents then be concern about everyone. Who are you to assume that there is any thing illegal being dumped, and how would they know. And just for your information, I have been at several meetings, and as it is my right a a resident and a citizen of this great country to have MY opinion? Go ahead and move the dump, millage or not, see how fast OUR  taxes will increase. I don't care if they made 30 million dollars last year, I thought that was a goal for a business was to make money. But since you have appointed yourself judge and jury your opinion is the only correct one!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, maybe this would be a whole different reply if I would have taken the job there years ago, but I only wanted part-time not full-time so I could be with my family. Of all the cancer cases, how many of these people help to contribute to there illness? How many smoked? How many worked in the mills? I could go on and on. I have an aunt that is fighting her 4th bout of cancer, she has nevered worked a day in her life, nevered smoked, and guess what never lived near the landfill! So everyone that might have cancer should  blame  the landfill or all landfills. Has anyone done any studies that will show me all the health problems with the employee? So before I choose to pass judgement, I will look at ALL facts and then any ONLY then will I form an opinion whether to shut them down or leave them alone. You all should do them same, if any of you attend church on Sunday's maybe you should listen to what is being said instead of taking up a pew! I don't want to appear unconcerning towards anyone, but they way I was brought up you can not be judge and jury, wait for the facts, if they are lying and fudging reports it will come out!
