Someone garbled this part: "Satanists are pagan or neo-pagan, but not witches." Can't tell if it was the writer or the speaker. This is a confusing topic even among Pagans, but the taxonomy goes like this: a "Witch" is someone who practices a magical craft, and may or may not be Pagan. A Wiccan is a Witch who practices in a specific Neopagan tradition called Wicca. Wiccans have always referred to themselves as Witches. Wiccans make up about 44% of all Pagans; there are hundreds if not thousands of Pagan traditions whose adherents are not Witches. So, some Witches are Pagan and some are Wiccan; all Wiccans are Pagan Witches; and most Pagans are neither.
Paganism and Satanism are distinct, but too many Pagans are too quick to make the disclaimer; it sounds to me like they are throwing Satanists under the bus, and if anyone is thinking the two are the same, constantly repeating this disclaimer really doesn't dissuade them.
