    Caladium and other summer bulbs

A couple weeks ago i planted some Caladium bulbs when I received them in the mail. I thought they would be up by now. So far no signs of growth. Did I put them in too early? Am I just being impatient? Does anyone have experience with these and know when the optimal planting time is for western PA?

they need really warm weather to sprout, they'll come up soon. As soon as they do, you can put them out in the garden around May 15.

I put them out in the garden a few weeks ago. I've been considering digging around to see if they've turned to mush. I'll give them a little more time.

I also started my caladiums weeks ago, but indoors, and they are doing great.  I start them in containers as big as the bulbs and add just enough potting soil to cover them.  All 100 of them have popped, and half are opening up.  Like Doug said, plant them outdoors when the soil warms, after May 15.  If they've turned to mush from the cold weather we've had, buy more and try again.  They're worth it.  Good Luck!

Wow, 100 caladiums, I'm jealous, one of my favorite plants.

They will fill the garden all summer. What colors?

Yes, 100 is very impressive. I think someone with such abundance should be able to spare a dozen or so for a poor dope that planted his too early ;-)

So the bulbs I planted never sprouted. Lesson learned. However, I was able to grab a variety of beautiful specimens at the Urban Gardener on the North Side and now feel all caught up.
