    Pitt's No. 1 -- what's your reaction?

The Pitt men's basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in both the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll and the Associated Press poll, the first time ever for the top spot [ read PG story ]. What's your reaction and what sort of season do you expect for this team?

I believe it's a well deserved nod for the Pitt Men's Basketball team to be ranked #1 right now...tons of great exposure for the program and something for the entire team to feed off of as they move forward towards the tournament come March.

Nothing would be better than an undefeated season and a #1 ranking come tourney time but for now I hope the team, the University and the city/it's fans relish this #1 ranking...no matter what the outcome of the season let's hope the team carries this momentum into the tourney.

    HAIL PITT!

This is the result of a lot of hard work put in not only by Coach Dixon and the current players and coaches but by Coach Howland and the past players and coaches as well.  This program had very little respect nationally when coach Howland and then a very young assistant coach named Jamie Dixon arrived.  They all worked extremely hard to convince top fight players to come to Pitt plus move the inherited players to the next level.  To coach Dixon, his staff and the players, I say CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!  It's been a long time coming!!!!

Let's use this as added motivation to get over the proverbial "hump" of the Sweet 16 in the NCAA  tournament.  Have fun with this time at number 1 because you've worked hard and deserve it!!!!

    HAIL TO PITT!!!!!

Pitt basically embarrased Georgetown, and will beat any Team who does not have big men to hit the Boards. Depth of the bench is probably the best in Big East which will keep Pitt No.1 . Blair just needs to stay out of foul trouble early in games. They are No. 1, and can, and will get better as a Team as the season goes on. Need to make 3's to open things up, and also work on making the foul shots to close-out any close games. Its been awhile.....nearly 30 years since we were saying PITT IS IT !!! Great Job Coach, and players.

Congrats to the Pitt program.  They have worked very hard over the years and play a very physical defensive game.  It is nice to see them reach #1.  They play in the toughest conference and need to back this ranking up with a solid tournament.  It's nice to see that it's Steelers playoff week and they are making the sports news.  Once again Congrats.

    2 questions with scheduling?

    1. Why could they have not moved their game on New Years Eve when they had their football team playing at the same time?

    2. Why have a home game on Sunday when the town will be ramped up for the Steelers playoff game?

They move start times on occasion to accomodate national TV, why not accomodate the fans.

Ssswweettt!!!!! I've been a Pitt fan for years and I remember watching Pitt get beat by any and everyone that came into the Field House. To be the No.1 team in college basketball is a huge accomplishment!!!!! However, this is also a testament to the players that came before and how they believed in Howland/Dixon vision of what it takes to create a big-time college basketball program.

I remember hanging the PITT NEWS in my dorm room back in '87 when team was # 2, finally after years of great coaches and players, can hang various polls in my MAN CAVE.  Next goal is the FINAL FOUR

    HAIL to PITT

With this ranking, #1 for the first time ever, comes the pressure of avoiding the upset...just like what happened to UNC against BC.  The Panthers deserve this, and can avoid disaster by playing their game, always their game....and the first test comes against St. John's.  This is a team that truly understands the game of team....has always understood this since Ben Howland days, and this team concept has continued under Dixon.  Team play will always trump teams with big time names...if they stay to the game plan and share the load.  Go Pittsters and carry the Panther to the Promised Land!!!!

Very, very pleased for the team, Coach Dixon, the university, and the City of Pittsburgh.  Well deserved recognition for all the effort by the participants--players and coaches--over the past 9 years to achieve this well deserved recognition.

The approach that Coaches Dixon and Howland brought to the basketball program--hard work, strong discipline, team play, persistance--are core values that we can all be proud of--and, of course, they win!  Very, very easy to be enthusiastic about the program and the University!!

My thanks to Coach Dixon and the team for their hard work and commitment.  Keep up the great effort!!

    !!LET'S GO PITT!!

Congratulations to all associated with Pitt basketball. How deserving you all are of this ranking.  This is the reward for hard work by the coach and his staff and all of the players. Keep up the good work to maintain that rating. It's a pleasure to watch PITT BASKETBAll!!!

I went to school and am friends with one of the Pitt Men's Basketball players, DeJuan Blair. I know he is good and he can help lead the team to a Final Four spot and maybe even the Title. Sam Young, Levance Fields and DeJuan Blair are the kind of players that make the Pitt team Number 1! I think they deserve the Number 1 spot.

I moved to North Carolina four years ago but I am still a die hard Pitt fan. That is hard to do here in ACC country. But it was so easy Sunday night when that previous # 1 team lost. Now in reality, they are my number 2 team to vote for but Pitt will always be number one. It was also so good to read the article by Ron Cook and he FINALLY admitted he was wrong about his comments about the choice of Jamie Dixn. Congrats to Jamie and the whole team for their number 1 ranking and thanks for all the great years of basketball!

It is a proud moment in Pitt athletics and the team and especially the coach deserve all the plaudits they are receiving.

It was interesting, however, that the definition of forever has changed. It used to mean since time started. I guess now it means only in recent memory. Pitt was recognized as National Champions twice under legendary Hall of Fame coach Doc Carlson and the Michael Jordan of his time Chuck Hyatt of Uniontown. The current team is great. They would easily beat the pre-war teams if they could somehow play. But there were other Pitt basketball teams that were unamious number one teams at the end of the season and one of them finished undefeated. To ignore them is like saying there have been no Notre Dame All-American running backs because the Four Horsemen happened before the memories of people today. I am proud of the Pitt basketball team today. I am proud that the school has a long history of successful basketball teams including National Championships.
