After a great deal of thought, I was able to get the list down to four. I don't think I can trim it any further. In no particular order:
Jack Lambert: There's some wonderful NFL Films footage of Andy Russell talking about why Lambert was great. Not because he was rough and tough, but because he NEVER made a mistake, and because he could do things other linebackers just couldn't, and the team was able to take advantage of that. When you add in the rough and tough, you get the perfect linebacker. Traditionally my favorite since I was a kid.
Lynn Swann: Swann was just such a *treat* to watch. He made so many big plays, and so many *spectacular* plays. There's just never been anything like Bradshaw-to-Swann.
The Bus: I've always been one who thinks running backs are vastly overrated. Mainly it's the offensive line that determines the running game; if the line is opening holes, then any compentent back can run through them, and if the line *isn't* opening holes, even a hall-of-famer can't do anything about it (remember Dickerson when he left the Rams for the woeful Colts?) Bettis is one of the few running backs who really impressed me. They'd had a fine running game before Bettis arrived, but when he showed up, you could just *see* the difference. He'd routinely get two or three more yards then the previous guys used to get on any given play. You could see him moving the pile, doing more on his own, above and beyond what the line was giving him. I became an instant fan. Add to that that he was a great guy, a team player, mentored the younger players, you've gotta love him!
Hines Ward: I just love Ward. If you put a gun to my head and told me I absolutely MUST pick just one guy, it might be Ward. I love him because he's the Anti-T.O. The Anti-Moss. In this era of me-first prima-donna spoiled receivers, giving the position itself a bad name, Ward is everything you could ask for in a receiver. Team guy, great attitude, excels not just at catching but at *blocking* (the ultimate measure of a team player), can do it all, smiles all the time... and when you add the rough and tough, geez, he's really the Jack Lambert of the offense. Totally epitomizes Steelers' football.
