Doug's on vacation unitl 6/30/09

Hi everyone, I'm off on vacation until June 30th. I've got to finish my third book, Tomatoes, Garlic and Basil which comes out next spring.

Deadline is 7/1/09 so the pressure's on.

 

I'll answer all you questions when I get back, but if you know the answer help a fellow gardener out, that's what this forum is all about.

Hey Doug! Glad to hear you are finishing another book! I'll be in touch about scheduling a fall program at Peters Township Library... Now for my gardening question - I heard on KDKA you speaking about your love of Rose of Sharon. We have a plant that we'd like to move if possible. It is in an area that has become too shady for it due to the growth of some other surrounding trees and evergreens. It's not blooming much and not getting many leaves on the bottom branches. We'd like to move it to a sunnier location in our yard. The plant is about 6-7 feet but not very full. There are two main branches at the base. Can you give us any direction about when and how to move this plant? Of course it has sentimental value as it was given to us as an anniversary gift by my parents...sigh... Carrie W.

Hi Carrie,

 

Wait until after it blooms and things col down a bit, like late August, early September. They don't mid being moved and are very hardy. Be sure to dig your new planting hole first, you don't want the plant to be out of the soil for very long.
