Over the last month, post-gazette.com has made some changes to our Obituaries. We hope this will help explain why we made the change.
While updating our site, we discovered that the daily "Latest Deaths" articles were really just condensed listings of the paid classified obituaries that are placed by funeral homes. This amounted to a significant amount of work on the part of a news assistant each week, so we set about automating the process.
The end result was a new comprehensive obituaries page at www.post-gazette.com/obituaries. Down the middle of that page, you will find staff-written obituaries on local celebrities (Vince Laschied, for example). In the right-hand column, there is an alphabetized list of the most recent classified obituaries that we have received, and each is clickable to the full written obituary. There are also links there to our obit archives which date back to the early 2000 and a search function to allow you to search by name, date, etc.
In short, we streamlined some internal processes and created an all-inclusive page for obituaries. In general, feedback has been mostly positive, and we hope that our users will find it useful in the future.
