Don Nania named Gateway baseball coach

By Colin Dunlap ][ 5:11 p.m. Wednesday

Got the confirmation today that Don Nania has been named the new baseball coach at Gateway High School. Nania, as you probably know, has been the very successful coach at Allderdice for the better portion of the past decade.

Nania led the Allderdice Dragons to the City League title this past season in a crazy game at PNC Park and also propelled the 'Dice to the crown in 2005.

I think Nania will do a good job at Gateway. There is some talent there and seeing him coach and interact with the kids at Allderdice, he will undoubtedly be a better people person than Jerry DalCanton.

Gateway first tried to hire Krivanek from PCC. Luckily he declined. He saved them from themsevles. Gateway needs a stable guy who is an honest evaluator and instructor. They may have found him in Nania.

Batavia,

You are the type of guy who is without a doubt wrong with high school athletics. Your going to sit there and take a shot at Jerry about his people skills? WHat a joke, the mane gave up time from his family, friends, work, etc. to coach a sport he loves and was passionate about and did a GREAT job. Gateway was NEVER a good baseball team and in 3 years they made a trip to the playoffs twice. The are now a respectable team. And hear you are saying what you say, typical negative person. All a high school coach has to do is be straight with his players and have their respect, he doesn't have to be liked by everyone, thus be a people person.

And then you take a shot at Krivanek, for what? He saved them from themselves? and you say stable/honest evaluator and instructor? what's that suppose to mean? Is that another shot at Krivanek you low life? You don't even know him or anything about him.

He is another one who gave all his time to that school and team. He has a child on the way with his other child, worked early a.m. and didn't get home till late, gave everything he had to a team and school he loved and for what, to have them tell him to resign so they could bring in an alumni's brother as the teams puppet figure head!! Krivanek was 43-16 in his years as the head coach and won over 100 games as the Varsity, JV, and 9th grade coach. Central had more players go on to play college baseball then any other school, they won the schools 1st baseball section title since 1992, had it's 1st player drafted in over 2 decades, and Krivanek won AAAA coach of the year last year.

So let me ask you this Batavia....what did you do? How about you get off your rear and coach some ball, or are you just that guy that would rather put coaches on the hot seat, talk like you have a clue about what they deal with, and second guess every desicion they make? My guess is that you don't have the knowledge or the ability to lead a program, make quick desicions, and evaluate talent the way Krivanek and Del Canton did.

So like my mom always said, think before you speak and if you say something, be prepared to get what's coming to you. My guess is that your some parent that one of these guys didn't play or in your mind they did wrong, but that's the world today....everyone thinks it should be the best 8 players and their son on that field.

I guess we'll see how these new coaches do this year after these guys left and we'll talk sometime in May and see who is right huh Batavia, sound good?

First off Batavia and PBar your both wrong I played under Jerry he was a good coach but his only true flaw was he couldn't keep his players wanting to play for him. At the first sign of something going wrong the whole line up would be changed. D1 recruits were on the bench and guys that were hitting under 200 were in the lineup. This caused the guys who should of been vocal leaders on the team to just sit around a mop wjile the were benched. It isn't that Jerry's a bad coach it's just he's more of a pitching coach thatn a head coach. Luckily for him that's what he's doing at Franklin this year. Now to Kravanek don't get me wrong he's a great coach that has a great record to show it, but he practically abuses his players. I don't mean he hit anbody but he's another guy who can't keep his cool when something goes wrong. He's always got to be in someone's face swearing at them. That doesn't make anyone play better it just pisses you off and makes you want the game to be over.

Finally I'd just like to talk about Coach Nania he's a great coach we learned more in one practice with him than the past couple years i've been playing here. And if you don't believe we have any talent then look at the facts. In fall ball we were 16 and 2. Oh and the summer team I've played on for the past 4 years that just so happens to be practically our whole statring lineup has gone 212 and 16 in those 4 years so if you have something to say maybe you should get the facts first ok Pbar.
