'V' reactions, Johnny Mecer doc

Morena Baccarin stars in "V" as Anna. (ABC)So I'm interested to hear what people thought of ABC's new "V"? As a long-time fan of the original, I was pleasantly surprised with how entertaining the remake turned out to be. We'll see if future episodes live up to last night's pilot.

In the meantime, it's nice to see that Kenneth Johnson, who created the original, is able to see the upside of a new series, even though he's not involved in it.

Online features editor Sharon Eberson and I talk about "V," "FlashForward" and "Sesame Street" in this week's Tuned In podcast.

Clint Eastwood, at piano, with Jamie Cullum. (TCM)

Can't say I knew much about singer/composer/lyricist Johnny Mercer before TCM's "Johnny Mercer: The Dream's On Me" (8 tonight), and an unfortunate moment of self-indulgence in the early minutes almost made me turn away.

Produced and directed by Bruce Ricker ("Tony Bennett: The Music Never Ends") and executive produced by music fan Clint Eastwood, that scene in question features Eastwood escorting his 13-year-old daughter (not granddaughter, but daughter) into a recording studio to sing a Mercer tune. That made me worry that the film would be nothing but an ego stroke dressed up as a biography.

But the moment passed and the focus returned to Mercer and his collaborations that resulted in such classic songs as "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" (or as I call it, the "Homefront" theme), "Hooray for Hollywood," "Jeepers Creepers" and "Moon River."

If nothing else, the music makes this doc worth... listening to.

First off, I have always been riveted by Elizabeth Mitchell's acting ability. So I instantly became fascinated with her FBI character Erica Evans.

I really liked how the writers slowly evolved the plot connecting the Visitors with a terrorist sleeper cell.

Of course,  Scott Wolf played Reporter Chad Decker in his usual, over the top style.

The opening scenes of the mega spaceships arriving around the world were stunning.

Every minute was thrilling.  I found the universal health care plot thread especially interesting, since it was plucked from the current health care debate, and made the fiction plausible.

Looking forward to upcoming episodes.

I enjoyed the new "V" more than I expected to. I liked that Anna didn't fully grasp human logic and mores--or at least pretended to. The "mole" plotline was *exceptionally* well played. There was some suspiciously BSG-type material thrown in (paranoia, who's an alien/Cylon instead of a human). The revelation of the original series' "fifth column" early on was a welcome break. I think the relationship between Elizabeth Mitchell's FBI agent and Joel Gretsch's priest is going to be very interested to watch unfold. The one thing I'm afraid of is that they're going to reverse the "Elizardbeth" plotline from "The Final Battle" and have Elizabeth Mitchell's son impregnate the foxy young visitor.

The cast was outstanding. Elizabeth Mitchell, Scott Wolf, and "Firefly" alums Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk--great stuff!

The "V" remake on ABC last night was extremely well done, with better acting and production values than the original.

That said, doesn't anyone find it ludicrous that one of the reasons the Visitors came to Earth was to obtain water? Really? They can eradicate 65 incurable human diseases, propel themselves across interstellar space with an anti-gravity drive, have ships whose interiors look like Mall of America on steroids, and yet haven't figured out how to bang two hydrogen and one oxygen atom together? Good lord, we've been producing water in space since the Apollo era.

And if the need for water is a ruse, it's a pretty lame one. It reminds me of Paul Simm's marvelous piece from The New Yorker:

Glad to hear others seemed to enjoy the "V" pilot, too. I'm very curious to see how it develops given some of the behind the scenes growing pains.

It helped going into it knowing that things would move fast in the first episode, so thanks for that. I liked and was surprised that the terrorist cell in question comprised Vs (I missed why/how they are called Vs, though) and that the Vs had been on earth for years. I thought the special effects were great (the original V, even with the cheesy special effects, is still awesome).

Like many others, I think Elizabeth Mitchell is great, and I enjoyed the Anna character. I am more meh on Scott Wolf/his character, but I felt the same way about the Kristine Walsh character in the original. I really hope a few from the original show up. I have to think there are many people like me who loved, loved, loved V and would appreciate seeing them.

As for the water, I thought in the original, the Visitors hid their need for water from everyone, that instead they claimed they needed some chemical. But I can see where it is a little unlikely that they could not manufacture it. Maybe the Vs figure with all the melting ice caps, it will be easy to get/take water?!

I'd forgotten all about Kristine Walsh. Thanks for the reminder, Traffic!

I sort of have how they call them "the Vs." It just sounds wrong to me but probably only because they were always "the Visitors" in the original and that somehow sounds more ominous to my ear.

"V" opened with strong ratings: 13.9 million viewers, making it No. 2 to CBS's "NCIS," but it beat "NCIS" in the 18-49 demo. It's the most-watched new series premiere of the fall season.

I'm sorry but just can't past this issue that the President or militray has no involvement or barely even referenced.
