'Simpsons' celebrate Halloween

In the 20th anniversary of THE SIMPSONS annual "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween special Homer becomes a half-man, half-brewing apparatus, trapped underneath the bar singing about his fate a'la Sweeney Todd in "Treehouse of Horror XX" airing Sunday, Oct. 18. (Fox)The annual "Simpsons" Halloween episode, "Treehouse of Horror XX," premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. on WPGH. I so prefer that Fox is now airing these episodes before Halloween rather than after as had been their wont for many years.

This year's three shorts include a Hitchcock-inspired story, a zombie tale and a "Sweeney Todd"-like musical.

I didn't find any of them to be can't-miss spectaculars and the first one "Dial M for Murder" is particularly violent as Bart and Lisa attempt to kill off each other's school teachers.

The zombie story, "Don't Have a Cow Mankind," is funnier if destined-to-offend. When Bart is revealed to be immune to the zombies and possibly the salvation of Springfield, it's suggested that everyone else will need to eat a piece of him to be made immune.

"Hold it right there," Marge says. "What kind of civilized people eat the body and blood of their savior?"

Upon hearing this, Rev. Lovejoy tugs at his collar nervously.

Totally agree about the placement of "ToH". I wonder what the rationale ever was for placing the Halloween episode after Halloween. It never made sense to me.

I think at one point Fox aired the Halloween episode after the holiday because the show's season did not premiere until after the end of baseball season, probably to avoid pre-emptions. But Fox airs less baseball now and this year the season started in Sept.
