'Three Rivers': What did you think?

Alex O'Loughlin and Justina Machado star in "Three Rivers." (CBS)UPDATED BELOW: Since "Three Rivers" aired opposite a Steelers game last night, it's unlikely that anyone in Pittsburgh saw it. (I wrote about that disappointing CBS programming move last week).

But if by chance you did see the show or you recorded it and watched it later, what did you think?

Was the Pittsburgh-set medical drama too bland or did it fit like a comfortable glove?

RATINGS UPDATE: Nationally, CBS's "Three Rivers" ranked third, drawing 9.2 million viewers, which is not a terrible number but the demos put the show in fourth place, meaning the showed skewed old, something CBS has been trying to avoid. The Hollywood trades do not sound optimistic about its future with The Hollywood Reporter calling the debut ratings "disappointing."

Locally, as expected, the Steelers game crushed all the competition. During the 9 p.m. hour Sunday, the Steelers game on WPXI drew a 49.9 rating/65 share of the viewing audience. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" on WTAE was second at 8.3/11. "Three Rivers" on KDKA-TV came in third with a 7.0/9, which did make it the highest-rated hour in prime time on KDKA. But ratings declined through the first three quarter-hours and then rebounded in the final quarter-hour.

The episode was long on "medical", short on character development - maybe because it was not the pilot episode.  I just reread your prior post on the CBS release describing the characters - most of this was not evident in the episode.   My brain kept making comparisons to ER and Three Rivers kept coming up short.  I think 3R could get tiresome very fast -- how many ways can you do transplant storylines - ER could draw on an endless variety of medical problems etc.   Maybe because I was in the ER mindset,  I  was surprised to see Angela Bassett had made the move from Chicago to Pittsburgh - mea culpa - it was Alfre Woodward.  It will be curious to see how the show develops but I'm not optimistic.  I did like the Pittsburgh skyline shots etc.; it will be interesting to see how they incorporate the Pittsburgh aspects into the storylines  (there was one Steeler reference - I'm waiting for Primanti Brothers) - they sent someone to Beaver Falls for donuts - HUH?????

I really enjoyed the show, probably because I am one of those rabid O'Loughlin fans.  I think the whole transplant concept is great, and i think the show will provide opportunities for more people to realize that they can help by being an organ donor.

having been thru the whole transplant ordeal with my brother in law - he recieved a lung at upmc - jan 07 - when he came out of recovery - he had a few more tubes and wires attached, as well as a trach tube, so he could not talk, but he was wide awake and totally aware of everything, just as the young woman in the show.

And i see nothing wrong with sending the 'rookie' to Beaver Falls to get donuts...  i work with folks who make the trip for special occasions at the office.

i am hopeful, and waiting to see how future episodes play out.

thanks for the opportunity to comment.

I hated it.  I thought it was boring.  I hate the Miranda character.  Dr. Andy's accent kept changing within each sentence.  The camera seemed not to be too steady as they panned around.  There was too much loud background noices that made it hard to concentrate on what was happening.  How many different ways can they transplant a heart, lung, eye, kidney, etc.  There are only so many body parts able to be transplanted.  This is by far the worst new show I have seen this season.  Horrible!!!!!!

I was thrilled to have Alex O'Loughlin back on my TV set on Three Rivers and frankly I was not disappointed.  While I thought the pace was a little too frenetic and there were too many medical stories floating around, I thought the show did an excellent job of portraying the world of transplant medicine.  I loved all the actors, but I must send a shout out to Daniel Henney and Christopher Hanke who deserve a special mention for their portrayals of Dr. David Lee and Transplant Coordinator Ryan Abbott.  They brought both heart and humor to the episode.  And what can I say about Alex?  He was marvelous in the role of Dr. Andy Yablonski.  He was compassionate, funny, and totally rocked the part of a skilled surgeon.  I do hope the pace slows down somewhat but even more important than that future episodes need to focus more on the hospital staff.  That's the hook the show needs to keep the audience coming back for more.

I hated the show.  It was boring.  What's with the mirage of slide shows before a commercial?  I hated when the young guy harrassed a daughter to give up her father's heart.  That is exactly what I thought this show would have in it, and as usually, my gut feeling was right.  CBS should just cut their losses now before it becomes too much of an embarassment for them.  Alex O'Loughlin will now have two failed shows under his belt which is not his fault.  He is a rising star and needs to be showcased in a decent show.  I know--bring back Moonlight.  Vampires are all the rage now and Moonlight has a well established fan base just waiting for its return.
