Kelly Frey gives birth

WTAE viewers probably noticed the absence of pregnant morning anchor Kelly Frey this week. I spoke to her Monday and she told me she was scheduled to have a C-section this morning.

As regular readers will recall, the Post-Gazette's Mackenzie Carpenter wrote about Frey's troubled pregnancy and her and husband Jason's discovery that their baby had a severe form of holoprosencephaly, a major defect of brain formation.

Frey told me that knowing the birth was going to come earlier than her October due date, she had planned to say something on the air last Friday, her last day at work before maternity leave. But, she said as much as she has appreciated the thoughts and prayers of Pittsburgh viewers, she, undertstandably, wasn't up for the outpouring of concern and phone calls that would come with that announcement.

"We're just praying he'll come out and have a loud mouth like his mom and be able to breath on his own and we'll go from there," Frey said Monday. "And if he can't, we'll have some extremely difficult decisions ahead as parents."

Frey gave me a famly friend as a contact and I spoke with that person today, who said, "It's been a good day. She is resting and family and friends are all around. She and Jason are doing great."

The family friend said they were not releasing any information on baby Bennett's condition. With that, I planned to wait a day to report anything until we had more concrete information.

But now a photographer has publicly posted a photo journal about the baby's birth. Frey had told me about a photographer who had taken pictures of the couple last week for a volunteer group called Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. Today's photos are raw and filled with emotion. The photographer wrote:

It would be impossible for me to describe the emotion that I witnessed today with Jason, Kelly and their families.  They entered the hospital with a terminal diagnosis for their son and the anxiety and emotion leading up to his delivery was difficult to process.  But I can tell you this, in no uncertain terms, I witnessed a miracle when I heard Bennett cry as he was born. He was able to breath on his own. A MIRACLE. ... It was amazing to watch [Bennett] wiggle and hear him making newborn sounds. He even yawned, which I thought was just the best thing in the world. Poor little guy was so tired from all of the activity. ... They transported Bennett to Children's Hospital for further tests, please keep him in your prayers. And congratulations to Jason and Kelly on their first newborn son! Praise God!

During Frey's maternity leave, Michelle Wright will fill in on WTAE's morning news until Janelle Hall returns from her maternity leave to sit in for Frey.

"The family friend said they were not releasing any information on baby Bennett's condition."

But you couldn't respect those wishes, Rob, could you?

You have no integrity. None.

This is another case of it being more about Rob Owen than anything else.

Santa - That is completely unfair to Rob. Those pics and that info were posted on a different web site WITH the couple's blessing and have been widely seen by now. In no way did Rob violate anyone's privacy. Rob is one of the best writer's this dying paper has - lighten up on him.

Santa Cruz, as I noted, I had no intention of posting anything last night until I saw that the photographer had posted the photos and detailed information. At that point, the cat was out of the bag. People were posting the photos and news on blogs and Twitter.

Once that happened, after consulting with my editor, I had no choice but to put up a blog post. I spoke with Kelly this morning and she completely understood the situation and the fact that you can't ignore news, especially when it's already been reported elsewhere.

Rob you said:

"I had no choice but to put up a blog post"

Wrong.

You always have a choice.

You also said, "I spoke with Kelly this morning and she completely understood the situation and the fact that you can't ignore news."

I am sure, in the immediate aftermath of all that happened with her and this child, she was tremendously thrilled to hear from a TV critic. I am sure she wasn't dealing with any other emotions or more pressing issues in her life.

Had you had any dignity or grace, you would have backed off the story, understood that maybe you were simply beaten on it and caught up with her later, when she reached out to you.

But again, you made it about you, which seems to be the common thread in your work. Dignity, grace and compassion are much bigger than getting a story at times (and you DIDN'T EVEN GET THE STORY, you linked to someone else). This was one of those times.

Compassion is totally foreign to you.

Santa Cruz, Kelly Frey called me this morning before 8:30 a.m. I did not call her.

I have made every effort to be sensitive while still doing my job and the job my editors expect me to do. I sat on the news of the troubled pregnancy for a month this summer until Kelly was ready to talk. I did not contact her directly at that time so as to give her the space she deserved.

When she was not on the air Monday, I knew viewers would be concerned. I don't particularly enjoy writing about the personal lives of TV talent but I know it's what expected -- by readers, by my editors -- when it impacts what viewers see on the air. True professionals in the business understand this, too.

I tried first to get information from others at WTAE Monday but I was advised, by someone who knows her well, that Kelly would want me to contact her directly. So I called Kelly on Monday and she called me back. That was the last time I attempted to make contact with her until she called me this morning and then I returned her call.

You're welcome to invent whatever fantasy you want that casts me as some sort of evil tabloid journalist who preys on a helpless news anchor -- but that does not make it true.

First, thoughts and prayers go out to Jason,  Kelly and Bennett Ryan

That said, Santa Cruz, could you please link your response on the That's Church blog regarding Virginia Montanez' (aka PittGirl) lack of dignity, grace and compassion for posting the news and website of pictures of the birth. Did I miss something?  Seems like by linking the website, the well-advertised blog invaded their privacy. Speaking of privacy, should Weddings by Heather post the pictures for the public to see? Please explain.

Or do you just have an ax to grind with Rob?
