'Sons of Anarchy' revs up for season two

Katey Sagal stars in "Sons of Anarchy." (FX)Even though it's a show about a motorcycle gang, FX's "Sons of Anarchy" (10 tonight) has always had a focus on the strong women who circle the club's orbit. None is stronger than Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Sagal, pictured right), the fiercly protective wife of club president Clay (Ron Perlman) and mother of club vice president Jax (Charlie Hunnam), the show's moral center.

In season two, Gemma becomes an even more pivotal character after events in the season premiere that also draw her closer to Jax's girlfriend, Dr. Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff).

This season the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club goes up against white supremacists led by Ethan Zobelle (Adam Arkin), who sets up a cigar shop in Charming, Calif., and demands that the club stop running guns for African-American and Hispanic gangs.

This creates new challenges for the Charming police force, including Sons-favoring Chief Unser (Dayton Callie, who gives a terrific performance) and Sons-despising Deputy Chief Hale (Tayler Sheridan).

The Sons also prop up a porn business while trying to keep their gang from disintegrating over the ongoing dispute between Clay and Jax, who learned last season that Clay was resposible for the murder of a club member's wife. Jax is also trying to follow his dead father's pre-cepts for rehabilitating the club but he doesn't get far in the early episodes as the tension between him and his step-father steadily rises.

I have to admit, I was not sucked back into the "Sons of Anarchy" world after the first episode, despite some shocking plot turns, but now having seen five episodes of season two, I'm once again fully invested in the characters and the stories.

Oh, and best line of dialogue, Jax references "The Sopranos" when speaking to a woman who thinks he's out to harm her: "You think I brought you here to Adriana you?"

Yes I watched season one and was instantly sucked in, if not for "The Shield", I probably wouldn't have even noticed it. I am glad that this season is looking good and avoiding the second year slump that so many new shows fall victim to...

I'm really not sure why I didn't like the season premiere as much but I just wasn't into the show again until I watched several more episodes. (Maybe part of it is that the show doesn't deal with Jax-Clay conflict right away and I was waiting for that to happen.)  I guess I just had to get back into that world. Now I'm hooked and eager to see more.

I love, love, love this show.  I never thought I would because I'm about as far from a biker as you could get - I'm a middle aged female who has never ridden a motorcycle.  I watched last season's finale again the other night so that I could remember everything that was happening and it made me wish that the new shows had already started.  I try telling people at work what a great show it is and they think I'm kind of crazy.  If only they would try it they would know!

Jules, I imagine you like it for the same reasons I do: Great characters, great performances.

I rarely yell at my TV but in the last 15 minutes or so I found myself screaming. The whole time I was wondering what Rob was talking about but that last 15 minutes was worth sitting through a ok episode.

Ratings were huge by FX standards -- 4.29 million viewers total; adults 18-49 numbers up by 95% from last year's first episode.
