'Rescue Me' ends its season

L-R: Denis Leary and Maura Tierney in RESCUE ME airing Tuesday, Sep. 1 on FX. (Giovanni Rufino / FX)FX's "Rescue Me" goes out with a cliffhanger tonight. It won't happen too many more times. We learned late last week that the series will end its run after 19 more episodes that are slated to air in two batches in 2010 and 2011 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks that inspired the series.

The current season of 22 episodes ends tonight and not a moment too soon.

The show rebounded creatively from the previous season's disappointments, and "Rescue Me" started this season strong but in recent weeks devolved into bizarre fighting for Tommy's affection between estranged wife Janet and girlfriend Sheila. Why would either of them want a guy as damaged as Tommy Gavin? A third love interest, played by Maura Tierney, also entered the picture and she gets a visit from Sheila and Janet tonight that's equal parts fitting (in the scheme of the show) and completely absurd (for real life).

Meanwhile, Uncle Teddy (Lenny Clarke) mourns his wife, killed last week in a car accident after she had been drinking, and expresses his frustration to other members of the unstable Gavin clan.

The episode ends with a cliffhanger but it's not much of one when you consider there are pretty much two options for its resolution and one would end the show 19 episodes too soon.
