WTAE drops weather channel, adds movie channel

At 5 a.m. Monday WTAE will drop its weather/traffic digital subchannel (Channel 4.2) in favor of This-TV Pittsburgh, a free movie channel of films from the MGM, United Artists and Orion vaults. Hearst Television, WTAE's owner, signed an affiliation agreement to carry This-TV on its stations' digital subchannels earlier this year.

I've heard more viewers express an interest in and appreciation for WPXI's RTN channel than any other digital subchannel, so This-TV Pittsburgh seems like a better bet for WTAE than the weather channel it replaces.

In addition to over-the-air, This-TV Pittsburgh can be found on local cable systems, including: Comcast (Channel 204), former Adelphia Comcast (Channel 188), FiOS TV (Channel 461), Armstrong (Channel 450) and Atlantic Broadband (Channel 110).

I've watched WTAE's weather channel in the past, mostly when heavy weather was on the way or had already arrived in the area. My main complaint is (was) why have a 24 hour weather channel if they are only going to put on the forecast taped from their early morning newscast, then leave it up all day long? They wouldn't even update it with their other newscasts that aired later in the day. When I want to know what the weather is going to be around rush hour, I don't want to be still seeing the morning traffic cams and what the temp was in Pittsburgh at 5 AM. And then there's the numerous commercials and other stuff that had nothing to do with the weather in Pittsburgh. I'll stick with Verizon FiOS' weatherscan channel (49), which is dedicated to up to the minute weather.
