PASADENA, Calif. -- There are two things you can count on at a gathering of the cast of AMC's "Mad Men": Obfuscation about future plot developments and as much cigarette smoking off-screen as there is on-screen. Both were very much in play at an AMC cocktail reception last night.
The reception was held on a terrace and at the start, many of the show's stars gathered below the terrace on a veranda to have a smoke. That's also where I found show creator Matthew Weiner who asked critics not to reveal any spoilers about the season premiere, not even what year it is set in. (Having seen the episode, it's hard for me to imagine that as a spoiler.) But Weiner did give some hints about what's to come, most notably that the theme of the season is "change."
Asking the actors questions is more challenging and usually results in a response that begins with "boy, I can't tell you that, but..." and then segues into a rehearsed, pre-approved spiel. That's not to say that there can't be some good information in what they've been told they can divulge, it's just obvious when they lapse into their talking points.
I'll have more from Weiner and members of the cast in a Tuned In column in the coming days.
