PASADENA, Calif. --Adam Goldstein (AKA DJ AM), who was injured a small plane crash with Blink-182's Travis Barker last year, said the event has bonded the two forever.
"Only he and I know what we went through that night," he said at a panel for the new MTV drug rehab show "Gone Too Far," "It's amazing, it's terrifying, it's bizarre, it's unique. We'd look at each other and have this strange tension. At first we wanted to avoid talking about .... but it gave me a whole second wind at life."
In "Gone Too Far" (10 p.m. Oct. 5), Goldberg draws on his past as a self-described 300 lb. crackhead.
"I would gorge on food. I'm a gluttonous person. I didn't look in the mirror. I had the same routine, swearing I'd never do this again, going to my mom and crying. One of those nights, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw myself for what I was and I just knew I couldn't go on. I had a .22 from when I was a paranoid crackhead and I grabbed the gun off the top of the dresser, put it in my mouth and pulled the trigger. And it jammed. And I sat there thinking, I can't even kill myself. One of my friends who was a recovering addict stopped by to check on me and said, 'Dude, you're coming with me. Let's go. And that was 11 years ago."
Goldstein said he had to shed his friends and won't hang out with anyone who does cocaine.
"I have an allergic reaction to drugs and alcohol," he said. "I break out in handcuffs."
