'Caprica' on DVD Tuesday

My review of the "Caprica" pilot ran in today's PG.

"Caprica" is the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel series that begins airing on Sci Fi Channel in January 2010. I liked it a lot better than the "BSG" miniseries pilot, which I panned back in 2003 before becoming a convert once the series started airing on a weekly basis.

Some may wonder why "Caprica" is on DVD first.  I'd heard once upon a time that Universal always wanted to release its "BSG" TV movies on DVD before airing them on TV but could not do that because of contractual arrangements with "BSG" creator Glen A. Larson. My guess was that, even though Larson gets a "consulting producer" credit on "Caprica," because just about everything in the show is a new creation -- save for the notion of robots called Cylons -- Universal found a way to put it on DVD before airing it on TV.

But according to a Sci Fi Channel publicist, releasing "Caprica" on DVD first has nothing to do with contracts. They're just testing out a new business model.

It certainly makes sense to release it on DVD first. I'm sure plenty of "BSG" fans will want to buy or rent the DVD rather than wait until an edited version of the pilot airs on cable nine months from now.
