'BSG' finale (spoilers included)

Edward James Olmos, Tricia Helfer and James Callis starred in "Battlestar Galactica." (Sci Fi)Wow. Just, WOW.

I've been dying to talk about the series finale of "Battlestar Galactica" since watching an advance DVD Wednesday afternoon. Now I can. (SPOILERS BELOW. STOP NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.)

So what did you think? Were you surprised by how it ended? How did you react? Login (or register to login) and post your comments below.

A few of my own brief observations:

-- I was pleasantly surprised that the show had an uplifting ending. I expected it to be much more of a downer.

-- I loved how everything came full circle and how all the prophesies fell into place. Kara Thrace did lead humanity to its end. (That Kara turned out to be something not-quite-human/not-quite-Cylon didn't bother me -- and I'm usually a literalist who wants concrete explanations -- but I can understand that other viewers may be annoyed.)

-- Did you catch executive producer Ron Moore reading a National Geographic at the end of the episode? I loved how Hera turned out to be "Eve." Fascinating.

-- I was somewhat surprised to see Baltar redeemed in the end but I loved how Caprica ended up seeing a Head Baltar to complement Baltar's Head Six.

-- The Roslin-Adama stuff had me a little choked up. Same with Adama's farewell flight from Galactica.

-- Did you find the human-Cylon compromise or the whole "let's chuck out technology and start over" to be a little too "Kumbaya"? I did not, but I imagine some viewers might see it that way.

-- Did you think it was a rip-off that they found Earth again and did a bait-and-switch with the first Earth? I'd heard a theory online that this might happen so I was OK with it. Until they found the ruined Earth at the end of the last batch of episodes, I always assumed they'd arrive on our planet thousands of years in the past, so I was pleased to see that come to pass.

-- In my review of the finale I referenced how this ending was rushed but not as rushed as "some other space saga finales." I was thinking of the finale of "Star Trek: Voyager" where the ship got back to Earth orbit in its final moments but the show gave almost no sense of what that homecoming was like.

Did not love the whole "angels" concept but was pretty much ok with how it all went down at the end. And we STILL don't know who the missing Cylon was although yes, it could be this "daniel" from the upcoming Caprica series. SOme great lines in the finale (especially the funny one where Rosyln says good-bye to Cottle and mentions his chain-smoking).

Yeah, I was pleased with the amount of humor in the BSG finale, which seemed just right. I wasn't bothered by the lack of info. on Daniel. I figure they have to save something for "Caprica."

I was quite pleased with the finale, even though I am a bit clueless to some of the finer plot points, due to the fact that I haven't seen many of the episodes from seasons 1-3.  We were on comcast at the time of the series starting, did not subscribe to digital, and that was when Comcast moved SciFi to the digital tier.  Anyway, I thought it was cool how Hera became Eve and the other survivers were also the start of our world.  I'm still a little worried about the Centurions they freed.

Loved the finale.  The "chuck technology and start over" decision seemed to be accepted a little too easily, but I don't know how else it could have been done.  I wouldn't have enjoyed watching 10 minutes of arguing over the decision.

This wasn't Head Baltar's first appearance (wasn't sure from the phrasing if that's what you were implying).  He has appeared occasionally since the episode called Downloaded.

I thought the finale was OK, not as good as some series finales but not as bad as some others (i.e., Start Trek Voyager & Enterprise).  The last two years of the show I had the feeling the writers were making it up as they went and the finale did nothing to change that view.  While the Cylons had a "plan" the writers didn't.

I was disappointed that no explanation was given for what happened to Starbuck.  Earlier in the season we discovered she had died on Earth.  No explanation was given as to how she and her Viper was resurrected.  All I can assume is it was divine intervention.

I also wonder if the finale was intentionally referencing Babylon 5.  The Cylon colony ship look like a Shadow ship.  And using one of the final 5 Cylons to disable the Colony ships weapons is straight out of Baylon 5 when Sheridan's forces were attacking Mars.

I had not problems with the ending.  Although I could not help keep thinking about the ending to the original British TV version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  When Adama was sitting on top of the hill and the camera panned up I was expecting to hear Louie Armstrong singing "What a wonderful world"

cerimorgan, what I liked, and wasn't clear about above, was seeing Head Six and Head Baltar together. If we'd seen that before, I didn't remember it.

NeedsToGetALife, I;m pretty sure there was no intentional reference to B5, but you're right that in some shots the Colony does look like a Shadows ship, especially just before the nuke strike.

I think what I liked is that even though the writers were making it up as they went along, in the end all the pieces fit together properly.

Rob, that makes sense.  I think you are correct that it's the first time they've been together.

After mulling over the finale for a day (didn't watch it until Saturday night), I'm liking it more and more.

I've read some criticism that there were too many "false endings" before it finally did finish.  I'm glad that it wasn't all action until the last 5 minutes and that they spent some timing saying goodbye to all the main characters after the "excitement" was over.  Then at the end, they added in a little twist and an open-ended question (has the cycle really been broken).

I think I probably agree with you on all counts and I really enjoyed the finale.  Although I look forward to seeing it on DVD without having to watch a commercial every five minutes...  I appreciate that some of the show segments were longer during the action sequences and that meant more frequent breaks between "character" sequences, but it still felt like a lot of commercials.

I was most happy about the positive ending and the moments of humor in the show.  After the way the first half of this season ended, on the ruins of earth, I was concerned that the whole thing was going to end in a more "doom and gloom" way.  But I liked the positive ending for the characters we love (Heilo didn't die - yay!) along with the message about how fast our society moves forward.  Although there is something sad about the people that seem to have chosen solitude over any type of companionship.  I understand that they've lost the person that they would really like to share earth with, but I don't know that seclusion is the best idea either.

I like the idea that earth is more of a kind of place than needing to be only one specific planet.  Kind of like the idea that we aren't the only "earth" in our time, and very fitting with the whole "we aren't alone" idea that draws me to sci-fi in the first place, I think.

Overall, two thumbs up.  And my critical husband agrees.  :-)

I've never invested and spent so much emotional energy on a Television show ever in my 50 years of life.  It truly was a bitter sweet ending for me.  For all the nay-sayers who pooh-poohed it from the beginning now have nothing to say.  With that basics of all of this happening before and all will happen again.  It ties in the Glenn Larson series as just another one of reoccurring theme of the story.  I only wish it would of lasted one more year.  There truly was enough story line to of finished off the story arc with out the bang bang episodes.  Don't get me wrong I loved every minute of it.  I guess I just don't want to lose a good thing.

I've been a fan since the start of the show.  I fought the Cable Company to show the Miniseries before they moved it to Digital.  I boycotted them and purchased the first season from England before it aired in the US.  I purchased episodes off I-tunes and watched it on my 2 inch i-pod screen in the dark with head phone so I could captcher the feel of the show.  Until Season 3 when I went to the Dish and have truly enjoyed the Series in all its full glory.

For now all I can do is go back and relive all the drama on DVD and wait till the extened version of Season 4.5 to hit the street.  Long live Battlestar Galactica!  So Say We All....

I too was really hacked at the BSG Finale till I came across this detailed CAPRICA the SERIES DETAILED REVIEW. It really does explain why the final five couldn't reveal more, it would have shot down the pilot! The BSG Finale makes a lot more sense now.
