NBC attempts to reboot its one-time hit "Heroes" (9 tonight, WPXI) with a new chapter called "Fugitives." For former fans who haven't been watching the show in its recently distressed state, Monday's episode, "A Clear and Present Danger," marks an improvement.
There may be a few headscratchers in the first 20 minutes, but not many. By the time the show's final set piece arrives, all confusion will be banished.
This new volume more clearly establishes who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Sen. Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar) is determined to round up anyone with powers. Why this "self-loathing hypocrite," as Peter calls him, fears folks with abilities is not clear. What he plans to do with them is unknown but he's aided in his efforts by the American president and HRG (Jack Coleman).
The good guys are folks like Claire (Hayden Panettiere), Hiro (Masi Oka) and Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) who resist efforts to be demonized and persecuted.
This particular story is more of an "X-Men" rip-off than "Heroes" usually is, but at least the show has begun making sense and isn't jumping through time in an incoherent, brain-spinning manner.
It may be too late for "Heroes" to win back disgruntled fans, but the final scene in tonight's episode is action-packed and dramatic enough to make "Heroes" enticing again.
