I'm still shaking my head over Fox's decision to cancel "Back to You" in favor of the awful, unfunny sitcom "Do Not Disturb" (9:30 tonight, WPGH). It's not that "BTY" was perfect -- it was still finding its legs -- but it showed far more potential than "Disturb," a disapointing and largely laughless comedy set in an upscale New York City hotel.
Niecy Nash stars as Rhonda, who manages the hotel's staff. Jerry O'Connell stars as Neal, the horndog general manager.
Fox filmed a pilot for "Disturb" earlier this year that sets up more of an upstairs-downstairs dynamic among hotel staffers but the episode that's airing first isn't that pilot. Instead, it's an episode about sex on the job. The staff watches a video about sexual harassment in the workplace. And then, predictably, they violate the guidelines against such harassment.
Gay staffer Larry (Jesse Tyler Ferguson, "The Class") wants to woo someone even though he's been happily partnered for years. The hotel's straight bellboy (Dave Franco) advises him on his advances, "You might want to aim it at someone on the pink team."
Ferguson was one of the best players on "The Class" but he's given nothing remotely funny here. And Nash had far much better material on "Reno 911!"
"Do Not Disturb"? Try, Do Not Watch.

Tonight Fox also premieres the revamped "'Til Death" (9 p.m., WPGH), now with two fewer young neighbors! Actually, they may turn up in episodes left over from last season, according to Entertainment Weekly, but the emphasis is now on Eddie (Brad Garrett) and his friend Kenny (J.B. Smoove), who manges to get a few laughs in tonight's season premiere. But overall, the comedy remains wan.
In tonight's episode Joy (Joely Fisher) freaks out after she's unable to use her feminine wiles to get out of a speeding ticket. Desperation and plastic surgey jokes ensue.
So let's just be clear: Fox canceled "Back to You," kept "'Til Death" and ordered "Do Not Disturb." Those are some terrible choices that won't rebuild a network's comedy brand.

:ast night Fox premiered its new game show "
Hole in the Wall" (a new episode airs at 8 p.m. Thursday, WPGH), a goofy exercise in human Tetris. Teams of three compete by contorting their bodies to match cut out shapes in a wall that rushes toward them.
If they pose accurately, they pass through the shape in the wall. If they fail, they're swept into a pool of water (and break off chunk of the wall that appears to be made of styrofoam).
When they break off pieces of the wall, judges determine whether they made it through fairly or not.
There were goofy team pairings last night: Hollywood hairdressers vs. Brooklyn construction workers.
The scariest introduction of the evening: "Hollywood hairdressers: It's time to face the hole!"
"Hole in the Wall" is goofy fun but after just five minutes it seemed like I had seen enough. How many different ways can a person get smacked into a small pool of water by an oncoming wall? Then again, millions of viewers tuned into "Wipeout," which was also pretty similar week after week. Perhaps "Hole in the Wall" will have a similar sort of appeal.
Did you watch "Hole in the Wall"? Would you tune in again? Post your comments below.
