CNet is reporting that Seagate, the world's largest hard disk drive manufacturer, is planning to dump the old spinning-disk technology and switch to solid state drives (SSD). Consumer-level drives will appear on the market eventually as they are planning to start with commercial and enterprise-grade disks in 2009.
This is good news for those of us who would prefer low-power non-mechanical storage media. It'll be a boon to the portable computer industry with longer battery life, lower heat generation and less noise.
