Family first, country second

It is with a heavy heart that I write this final post. I was forced to leave Minnesota before the end of the convention to be by my father's bedside. He passed away at 1 AM this morning after a heroic battle against cancer. I am grateful for the time I got to spend with him during the last several years. He loved to talk politics. The 2008 election became a real bonding point for both of us. When the conventions rolled around I was reluctant to go. He said he wanted me to go so I could tell him all about it. I called him every day.

There is a lot of talk at these political conventions about "family values" and debates over which party has more or less. Nobody has the monopoly on them. My dad was a life-long Democrat but he proved over and over again that he was chock full of family values. No words can describe how much he will be missed.

Thanks for the convention blogging. I'm sorry for your loss, but glad you were able to be with your father. I'm sure he was very proud of you. Take care.

Rob,

Of course you don't know me from Adam, but I lost my father 2 1/2 years ago to emphysema and all I can say is that death sucks and the hurt is intense.  I just wanted to share this little passage that was shared with me at that time that I found helpful.

Of course nothing I can say or do will fill the hole now in your life. But perhaps this quote, from a Church of England cleric, may give you some comfort.

Death is nothing at all. I have slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you.  Whatever we were to each other,  that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed, at the little jokes we enjoyed together.  Pray, smile, think of me, pray for me.  Let my name be the household word that it always was.  Let it be spoken without effect, without trace of shadow on it.  Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as if ever was, there is an unbroken continuity.  What is death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?  I am waiting for you for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.

ALL IS WELL.

-Canon Henry Scott Holland (1847- 1918)

Best wishes,

Rich

Rob, I am so sorry to read of your father's passing. Be comforted with the thought that you gave him great pleasure and pride through your latest assignment.

McCain will put the lobbyists on the run and bring the economy back so it will roar.

In contrast Obama wants to start all these new government programs which will force higher taxes and become a drag on the eonomy.

McCain has shown that he is a Maverick leader with his choice of Sarah Palin   -   he is the right person to lead this country.

Governor Palin could easily handle a foreign crisis  -  she is strong willed and she will ask about the doctrines later.
