If you have any lingering doubts about David Archuleta's status as one of the most successful American Idol contestants in the history of the show, look to the hordes of sobbing tweens that linger in his wake. There should be plenty of them in town the night of the 28th, when Archuleta brings his smooth, R&B-inflected pop to Pittsburgh. Like his committed fans, Archuleta's many accolades speak to his success as a performer. Take a look:
Age ten: Archuleta wins the children's division of the Utah Talent Competition.
Age twelve: Star Search 2 crowns Archuleta as the Junior Vocal Champion.
Age sixteen: Archuleta is one of the youngest finalists to ever appear on American Idol.
Age eighteen: Archuleta releases his debut, self-titled album.
And now we're pretty much up to date. His first LP has sold over 700,000 copies and spawned three singles (including the infectious "Crush"), he's released three EPs, won two Teen Choice Awards (for Most Fanatic Fans and Best Smile) and accumulated more shrieking fans that it would be humanly possible to count. Exhausting, right?
But Archuleta shows no signs of slowing down. A second album of shiny pop tunes is in the works, along with a Christmas album. How he finds the time to do all of this while simultaneously selling-out venues and skipping around the globe, introducing the rest of the world to the sleek tenor contained within his relatively diminutive frame, staggers the mind.
Take more than a pinch of youthful vigor, combine it with a classic pop voice and you've got the recipe for David Archuleta. And don't forget the fans. See for yourself July 28th. The Byham may shake itself to pieces. Tickets are running out - order now!
