Retro Rogers --- Lady Liberty, Mike Tyson and Spider-Man

For those checking the newspaper this week, I am not drawing. I am in Seattle at the annual confrence of the AAEC (Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.) The weather is fabulous (no rain) and I am having a great time despite all the ink-stained hand-wringing over the glum economics of newspapers.

Although I am not drawing for the editorial page, I can still post something on my blog. Here are some random cartoons published on July 3rd. First, I revisit one of my cartoons from 1986. America was in the midst of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Needless to say, the merchandising of Liberty was obscene. Next, is a cartoon from 1997 that was published after Hong Kong was returned to China. It was also aroud the same time that Mike Tyson had bitten off Holyfield's ear. Finally, a cartoon from 2004 showing W as Spider-Man (the second Spider-Man movie had just come out). Clearly, Bush's idea of "accomplished" was different from the rest of the world's.
