In "A Fine Point," on the obese, you wrote: “It's like smoking - if they want to over-eat, get fat, let them. They know it's not good for them - but hey; it's their body. If they want to kill themselves, so be it. It's none of my business.

“But as with smoking, when it affects me, like when their blubber oozes into my seat at the theater, on a plane or at the Steeler game, then it's my business.

“Eat, smioke and be merry - for tomorrow you will probably die.”

Don’t worry. My point is not that national healthcare and productivity costs affect you, too.

What I’m really curious about is, in those cases where you say it *is* your business, what do you do about it?

news.yahoo.com/.../08599193867100;_ylt=AhS_fXcP8vt6Itoe3y4YtXis0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTFpMjgyZTUxBHBvcwMzOQRzZWMDYWNjb3JkaW9uX21vc3RfcG9wdWxhcgRzbGsDZml2ZXRoaW5nc3Ro

www.postgazette.com/.../1015124-372.stm

What he does is point out that the five (he agrees with them) were American to begin with, and that the problem is we have forgotten them.

The last is “look over the horizon.” The first, “be ambitious,” he calls the “key to Americanism,” and can be at least partially summarized (by me, not him) with the self-evident truth that “we are a nation of individuals.”

Here at Henry’s Handful, the conservatives emphasize “individuals” while the liberals emphasize “we.”

They are not inconsistent. They are how we got here, and we ought to be able to travel forward embracing both.

Mr. Shribman says: “Our eyes have always been on the future, not the past. We've ignored the past . . . but we have built shining futures: a frontier future, then an industrial future, now an information future. When people say America is no longer the land of the future they are forgetting that we already have had more futures than any people on earth. Who is to say we don't have one more in us, or more?”

Indeed. But note that it is a question. It is what is at stake.

“We know how to do this,” he concludes.

Of course, one side of our divide continues to show itself to be infinitely more boneheaded than the other, but that’s something we can work through calmly, amicably, with open-mindedness and reason. I’m know we can all agree on that.
