Doesn't anyone find it odd that just a week and a half ago there were also reports of three Russian "homeless men suspected of killing and eating a 25-year-old and selling parts of his body to a kebab and pie kiosk." (See news.sky.com/.../200911315453983)

Was any of this on the Mayan calender?

Rover: I thought of Fight Club immediately and one of my favorite lines from any movie. The Brad Pitt character explains dumpster diving for lipids to further the soap scheme and summarizes it on this cheery note (paraphrasing): "So, the rich ladies end up washing their faces with their own fatasses!"

A week or whatever ago, I almost posted the link to a Time magazine piece called “Five Things the U.S. Can Learn from China,” but decided I didn’t want to do more than I already had toward turning our quiet little olive grove into link-volley city. Mr. Shribman’s column today, “Learning old lessons,” discusses that same article.

What he does is point out that the five (he agrees with them) were American to begin with, and that the problem is we have forgotten them.

The last is “look over the horizon.” The first, “be ambitious,” he calls the “key to Americanism,” and can be at least partially summarized (by me, not him) with the self-evident truth that “we are a nation of individuals.”

Here at Henry’s Handful, the conservatives emphasize “individuals” while the liberals emphasize “we.”

They are not inconsistent. They are how we got here, and we ought to be able to travel forward embracing both.

Indeed. But note that it is a question. It is what is at stake.

Of course, one side of our divide continues to show itself to be infinitely more boneheaded than the other, but that’s something we can work through calmly, amicably, with open-mindedness and reason. I’m know we can all agree on that.

Myreply, I'm not a creation of Scarlet, I'm a creation of me*** I think that I do have a little better impression of Scarlet than you do, but actually I have a pretty good impression of you as well, we fall on the same side of issues quite alot.

I thought maybe you were getting a little ticked off, but if you're having fun, then me too.

Scarlet, you wish you were as smart as me? That's a hoot.I can hardly keep up with the rest of you. For the record, however, I do appreciate the fantastic participation from everybody on compliment Mugsy week. Alas, all good things must come to a close.

***Actually, the real Mugsy, both first and second, were beloved dogs. The first was killed as a pup in an accident, the second lived many years as a part of our family and passed away about 5 years ago. Just like Mr. Bojangles, I still grieve.
