Chavez: 'It's going to be weird'

By Dejan Kovacevic | 9:22 p.m. Tuesday

Jesse Chavez, suddenly a member of Tampa Bay's bullpen, sounded as if he had mixed emotions about the trade.

"It's going to be weird," he said by phone just now. "We all watch the games of other teams, so I know Tampa has a lot of talent. It's going to be nice to have a chance to go help them, and I'm actually kind of antsy about it already. For a team like that to want me me, it's cool. But I never would have guessed this would happen."

Chavez, 26, was coming off a strong rookie year in which his 96-mph fastball helped him to a 4.01 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 22 walks in 73 appearances. John Russell grew increasingly comfortable using him in late innings, and he would have become a candidate to close next year if Matt Capps faltered.

So many guys in the bullpen I would have preferred to lose:

but, all in all, I am pleased to pick up a bonified good Major League player!

Finally, Neal tries to help the PIRATES instead of Lynchburg or State College!

Is this the first in his tenure?!?

Best wishes, Chavey! And you deserve to be wanted by a talented team - you had a fine year.

And for the rest of yinz: I TOLD you he was closer material! sheesh!

<<I think Mark proved that his whatsiwhosit and his mean divided by his hits and his body fat prove he is underpaid at 4+ mil.>>

Arriba - hilarious!

Arriba

to have Iwwy and Andy flip-flop positions during the season on some kind of regular basis we really will be the laughingstock.  That's little league.

_____________________

I dont' think there is much chance that Andy and Iwwy are going to flip flop at all. They brought this guy in to be a 2nd basemen and that is what he will be. If Pedro pounds the ball at AAA, half way through the year, Andy may be wearing a different uniform.

en.wikipedia.org/.../Akinori_Iwamura

Iwamura hit 44 HR in Japan in 2004, 32 in 2005, 30 in 2006. ...

HMMMM.. yes i know that Japan has fences at 280.

I wonder what ESPN and everyone else says about the trade.. I thought though you couldn't trade until the end of World Series though?

with that new avatar, we need to rename PoH.

Plenty of Angst?

or to keep the PoH thingee...Pulling out Hair?

i dunno.  neither seem quite right.

So i googled PoH for some ideas (aren't i pathetic?) and i got:

Personal Oral Hygiene

Profitability of Hawaii

Project Open Hearts (hmmm...no...too much like Plenty of Hope)

Power on Hours (I have NO IDEA what that means)

"pOH is sometimes used as a measure of the concentration of hydroxide ions, OH−, or alkalinity."  (Alkalinity.  hmmm, THAT'S interesting.)

Pilots Operating Handbook

Pursuit of Happiness (no freaking WAY)

Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital (may need one)

Plane of Hate (now we're ONTO something!!!)

Player Owned Houses

Plains of Havoc

Past Obstetric History (eeewwwwwww!!!)

Potential of Hydroxide (now if it were PERoxide...)

Pat on Head

Peace Out Homey (absolutely not)

ok, any votes?

DK, may I add something to your story for tomorrow morning?

"It's going to be weird (actually having a shot at winning)," Chavez said by phone Tuesday night.

also, this bears a very interesting question--  If Aki has a good 1st half, if the Pirates are at .500 again, does NH do that "well its better than a draft pick" and trade him like he did LaRoche.

I'm all for developing younger players, but I think NH has to realize "3 and 24 streaks after the trade deadline" in 2010 could mean the hatchet.

JJ hardy welcome to the pirates.

Don't  know if anyone's posted this yet or not but on both the Rays mlb site and the Tampa Bay newspaper site, the Rays' VP Friedman says the Pirates were "all over them for about a month" to get Aki. And according to Tampa Bay online, the Rays pretty much concede that the Pirates get the better end of the deal, though they, of course, see an upside with Chavez ... basically concession by the Rays of salary dump. Didn't want to pay Aki's buyout.
