Drew -

catchy tune

but you said "2) he's been in PBC system and knows what PBC wants to teach"

-----------

what dioes the PBC want to teach?

- cheating the city and fans out of MLB baseball?

- salary dumping

- talking out of both sides of their mouth?

Knowing what the Bucs want to teach is not a positive in my book.  They should be bringing in people with no prior ties to this organization..... losing breads losers mentality.

Again, carlos may be fine, the point of the criticizm is people here and in the organization talking Hill up like a god, and as soon as he is gone, he iis an old bum...."carlos will be a better younger version.... "

out

I actually turned on the World Series last night and I asked myself:

- Do I really see the Pirates getting there in my lifetime?

And when I thought about that question, I had to turn the TV off.  It was just too painful to think about.

Drew,  I would suggest that BFD should find himself in the music he is already lost,

BFD,  when you come to an understanding of this tune and your your recent rants of the past day or so so will be on your way to an arrival of a greater understanding!!

BFD,

Did you expect the FO to say " Carlos Garcia is no Perry Hill, but he'll have to do"  ?

I don't really get the sense that people here have been bashing Hill. They've known for a week or so that he wasn't coming back and now they are happy for the new hire ---someone who they are familiar with because he is an old Pirate player.  I don't see the big deal or hypocrisy.  I think it is just a part of human nature: If you don't want to work for the team we like, then fine--good luck to you.

Hostage said there were sheep that always follow. There is some truth to that, but it works on both the pos side and neg side. Some take an idea and clamp on to it like a pit bull.I guess there isn't any new ideas.

The blame of the week...Neal caused the biblical plagues,Somali pirate attacks, the election corruption in Afghanistan, and the govt standoff in Zimbabwe.Geez that guy ruins everything. :-)

@Maz: "Hostage said there were sheep that always follow. There is some truth to that, but it works on both the pos side and neg side"

---

perfect example of this was when both sides eviscerated each other over Yates.  YATES.

I mean, it's YATES.

I'm sure he's a wonderful husband, father and teammate and i'm really glad about that but...

it was YATES.

Both sides.  No quarter.  End of the world cataclysmic battle over future hall of famer YATES.

(Did i mention it was Yates?)

Back after some time for a funeral and some reflection -- a close friend died last week, and he was a couple years younger than I am.  Saw him last about six weeks ago and no indication that anything was amiss...

I see that the Iowa game was reported here.  I only heard the end of it on the radio and saw highlights on TV, so not much to comment on -- except that there was a whole lot of complaining going on here.  I'm starting to think that the guys who predict that when the Bucs win the world series half the fans will still be moaning about the ugly side of winning are right.

BFD -- didn't you once say that you weren't going to get an avatar?  But how appropriate to commemorate your silliest line of reasoning so far.  I like it, but for reasons that you wouldn't understand.

Good afternoon inmates near and far.

Mr. Hadar, my former mother in law just invited me to an Iowa Thanksgiving, doubt I'll get to take her up on that. You might be interested to know, you can't call her whenever Iowa football/basketball is on, she won't answer the phone. She's "watching the boys."

Really hope the Phils can beat CC tonight, we need a six or seven game series this year.

I'm interested in everyones opinion of the DH rule. I was interested to hear an announcer on XM yesterday say when it comes to using ten players in a baseball game, "you should put a keg out behind 2nd base and call it what it is."

Drew71 wrote re: Afternoon baseball talk, 11-1-09
on Sun, Nov 1 2009 6:12 PM

Radio - i think that's a pretty good way to describe it.  Balls off the keg are in play.

BTW, remembering your great line re: application in for umpire score...after the way they were calling balls and strikes last night, i think we NEED you.

They got the HR call right...of course they did, they used instant replay!  They botched it by themselves.  i can understand why...they only had SIX umpires.

Drew: Actually, as soon as they said it hit the camera, I thought to myself, the ump on the foul line should have heard a different sound when it hit. When the Yankees Manager first came out, they told him it hit a fan, no way it hitting a fan would make the same sound as hitting that camera. The fan would yell, or groan, or something, hitting the camera, especially the lens, would possibly break, shatter, sound like contacting metal, or plastic.  If it hit the lens, was that camera out the rest of the game? I've always liked the 6 ump setup, wish they had it all year, but last night that wasn't even good enough. Wilson for crew chief.

JHadar wrote re: Afternoon baseball talk, 11-1-09
on Sun, Nov 1 2009 7:00 PM

Drew -- Thanks for the sympathy.

So, baseball in November at night?  Still another reason why I can't get excited about this series.

Just to keep the conversation going a little, does the DH give the AL or NL a greater advantage when playing at home?  My first thought is NL because of having pitchers that hit on a regular basis, but on second consideration the AL has 9 guys who hit everyday, where the NL team has to bring a guy off the bench and since with few exceptions pitchers aren't good hitters, the AL's advantage of a guy who hits every day may be greater.  On the third hand, the NL defensive bench should be better for having an extra guy.

What am I leaving out?

Oh yeat, it's a stupid rule -- and even stupider for only be adopted by one league.

Drew71 wrote re: Afternoon baseball talk, 11-1-09
on Sun, Nov 1 2009 7:04 PM

Wilson would also do a better job.

Camera stayed in place but don't know if it was still working.  I couldnt see anything wrong with it...no glass or anything else appeared to fly off from it.

the fan comment is strange.  i could see if they thought it hit the unpadded wall just below the camera, but not a fan.  you're right, it would sound different.  a camera or wall wouldn't say "oh s****"

Interesting quote from Ozzie Guien before the game tonight.

I guess Cole Hammels made the statement that he wished the season was over.

Ozzie said if he played for him, he would have taken him into the office and told him that he and Cole will be on the same page or Ozzie would see him in ST.

Asked about it being the middle of the WS, Ozzie said he did not want him going back into the locker room with the rest of the players like that.

Drew71 wrote re: Afternoon baseball talk, 11-1-09
on Sun, Nov 1 2009 8:41 PM

the Hammels quotes after the game were similar in nature, whole season's gone that way etc etc.  very negative.  The young man seems to be haunted by high expectations.  it appeared to be easier for him last year when he was breaking thru than after expectations are thru the roof

he threw some nasty pitches last night before he got the nasties.  when things started going sour for him, you could just sense that it was what he expected.  When Y's got two, to pull within 1 at 3-2, i saw how he acted and threw after that and thought it was already over.  But the talent is there...his pitches in first three innings made batters look foolish.

Drew71 wrote re: Afternoon baseball talk, 11-1-09
on Sun, Nov 1 2009 8:43 PM

ps...speaking of performances, Ozzie is "performing" well.  That insight alone was worth whatever he's getting paid.  And if you follow Ozzie, you know he meant it re: see you in ST.  He may be crazy...crazy like  fox.

A-Rod got hit 3 times in the last 2 games, they warned both benches. I just don't get it. This is what is wrong with baseball, the Yanks should have their shot at nailing someone and that would end the shots at A-Rod.

Now the Yankees could hit someone and the pitcher and manager get tossed and the Philles  who hit A-Rod 3 times would get off with nothing.

Hamels shows why the Pirates shut Ohlendorf down this season.  Last season Hamels threw 44 more innings than he ever did before and some say that is why this has been worst seasom in MLB

Yes I believe your are right, you can over pitch a pitcher. The Yankees moved Joba from a starter to keep his innings down for the series. They have protected CC by giving him rest in September.

The Yanks can beat you in a lot of ways, don't have to hit home runs, but I would not be surprised to see them put this game away with a couple of blasts. But you never no, the Phils might come to life.

You got my vote on that one.

I think the difference in him and JR, is that JR would not tell someone he would see him in ST unless he was a guy like Moss. Ozzie would not care who he was.

Oh, and I forgot, JR would have to confer with NH before doing anything.
