CINCINNATI -- One to go.
The Pirates' 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds tonight at Great American Ball Park very much had that get-this--over-with feel, from Zach Duke uncharacteristically losing his command to the offense swinging wildly at an erratic opposing pitcher to ...
Well, whatever.
Tomorrow, the franchise's 123rd season ends, 98 losses after it began, with little more than the assurance that 100 cannot be achieved.
And it might well be that the avoidance of 100, in and of itself, led into this letdown, coming right after a 6-2 stretch in which players spoke of treating like "our playoffs," as center fielder Andrew McCutchen describe it.
Duke lasted only five innings, charged with five runs, six hits and, most striking, five walks. The latter was one shy of his career high.
He finished 11-16, clinching the National League lead in losses, with a 4.06 ERA.
Andy LaRoche's RBI double in the first spotted the Pirates a quick lead, but Cincinnati was ahead, 5-1, upon Duke's exit. Delwyn Young's three-run home run in the sixth - his seventh of the season, first since Aug. 18 - but that to 5-4, but that would be it. Chris Bootcheck and Anthony Claggett gave up three more.
One sign of all the Pirates' turnover this summer: When Claggett made his Pittsburgh debut last night in the eighth, he became the 49th different player and 26th pitcher to wear the uniform this year, each tying the franchise record.
UPDATE 10:44 p.m.: Catcher Ryan Doumit has a mild concussion, the result of being struck by a foul tip last night. He did not play tonight and will not play tomorrow, manager John Russell just said. Russell called Doumit "a little woozy."
