Ascanio has shoulder surgery

By Dejan Kovacevic | 5:19 p.m. Friday

CINCINNATI -- Pirates pitcher Jose Ascanio had surgery this morning to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

It was performed by Dr. James Andrews at his office in Pensacola, Fla.

There is no timetable for Ascanio's return, general manager Neal Huntington said.

Ascanio was one of the two pitchers the Pirates acquired from the Chicago Cubs -- along with Kevin Hart -- for pitchers John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny. Hart went 1-7 after joining the Pirates.

Ascanio has said several times he felt no discomfort in his shoulder until after the trade.

UPDATE 7:35 p.m.: Huntington did not give specifics of the surgery or the extent of the tear, saying only, "All surgeries give cause for concern. But, in this case, we have every reason to believe he will make a full recovery."

Some guys actually perform better after they've had their shoulder sliced open.

Just look at Phil Dumatrait.

Demery,

Is that a serious assessment of Pete Peterson?  Do you really think he was bad?  Sorry if I'm missing sarcasm.

More of a chance for Hacker to make the squad next year.  Most pitchers don't fully recover.

I wonder if there is a way to prevent that?

daryle--if they extend him I'm going to look for something else to do next summer.

For all those who like to judge the trades based on the players getting injured . . .

Look on the bright side.  Didn't Burnett have torn labrum surgery?  Maybe we can trade Ascanio to the Nats if he gets better?

Can't we just call a "do over" with the Scrubbies?   ;-)

Pittsburgh Pirate owner big Bob Nutting was cleaning out his office at PNC Park.

With the season ending, he wouldn't have to spend anytime around this "dump" (as he calls it) for awhile.

Nutting couldn't wait to get his hands on some "good chow", which would now be available daily down the road in Wheeling, WV.

Looking up.....He noticed GM Neil Huntington whizzing by with his usual "huffin' & puffin" face.

"Hey Neil", called out Nutting...."Come here for a minute."

Huntington put on the brakes and circled back to the boss's office...."What's up Mr. Nutting?"

"Some damn reporter asked me about...who's this pitcher....Pedro something.... we got from the Bears??"

Huntington looked down....."You mean Pedro Ascanio from the Cubs."

"Yeah...Yeah....This reporter mentioned that he's hurt?", asked Nutting.

Huntington looked at his watch, and felt thirsty ....."I've only got a second Mr. Nutting....I've got a conference call about a future trade with the Yanks....

But anyway....Don't you worry about that. Ascanio has to have some minor shoulder surgery. He should be fine for next year."

Nutting pushed his glasses closer to his eyes ...."He wasn't hurt before we traded for him was he?"

"Oh no sir", said Huntington...."JR assured me it happened the first time he took the mound for us."

"Now if that ain't some dadburn bad luck....huh?!", said Nutting wiping the sweat from his brow.

Huntington straightened his posture and took on more of a stern look...."Look Mr. Nutting, let me handle these weasels with the press.

Just send them my way on questions like this."

"Ok...Ok", said Nutting.....What are you gonna tell 'em by the way?"

Huntington looked at his watch again to remind Nutting he was on a tight schedule....."I'm just gonna tell 'em it will make competition tighter next spring....Pitchers like Hacker, Valdez,  Bootcheck....They'll all

compete with Ascanio."

Nutting grew a big grin on his face...."Damn Neil...You sure are swift! Why didn't I think of that?!"

Huntington started to move along down the hall, and uttered the final words of the exchange...."Because you're the boss Mr. Nutting....You don't have to think. Leave that to me, Coonelly and the accounting department.

We all just hope someday we can be half as successful as you and your Dad have been as owners of the Pirates since 1996."

"And counting!!!!", yelled Nutting....as Huntington scampered down the hall in hopes of locating his diet Dr. Pepper.

Daquido, thank you.

Daryl- I think sometimes you need to look past the sabermetrics (on-base, range, etc) and ask yourself, can you pressure Tabata and Alvarez to produce in their rookie seasons.  Also, you need Cutch to be Cutch and not develop bad habits trying to over-reach.  Thus, to me, Vlad makes sense.  Very tough to sign, but if anyone recalls what the Mets did when signing Pedro Martinez, it boosted their presense in DR and Beltran signed the next year.  That would potentially overcome the loss of Sano in the long-term development of the academy.

You Have to utilize your pitching staff, which the rotation could be really good.  I think the Pirates only have Duke for next year.

Everytime something does not work out the what the PBC planned it, it turns into a big item on this blog site, some people IMO live for moments of failure.

Where are the same people when players achieve success?

DaveKerwin wrote re: Ascanio has shoulder surgery

Vlad Guerrero to the Pirates?  Dream on.  First, no way Bob Nutting would pony up for anyone like that.  Second, what makes anyone think a player anywhere near his caliber would want to come to this loser organization?  The only way anybody would come here is if they way overpay for them (ie, Derek Bell, Burnitz... and they were scrubs) so if they would offer him $30 million a year maybe.  Third, one player won't fix this Titanic of a mess.

I am trying to hang on as a fan but how much can one take?  Once they passed on Weiters, I vowed to not give them one dollar of my money by going to the games.  I have gone to one but my brother in law paid.  I guess I did pay for a few concessions.  I love baseball and the Pirates but this is SO FREAKING HARD!

Considering all the luck we've had with trading away players who then get injured soon after for their new clubs, this was bound to happen at some point.

Hopefully he comes back strong and it's not too bad, but this is not usually an easy injury to come back from, depending on the severity.
