The Pirates today named Pedro Alvarez their minor league player of the year, Rudy Owens their minor league pitcher of the year.
UPDATE 7:21 p.m.: Sorry for the minimal output on this news. Was not expecting the team to announce something like this an hour before the first pitch, and I had a few other things to finish.
Alvarez obviously is in Italy, but Owens just stopped up by the press box, and this is some of what we had to say ...
> On the honor: "It's great to get something like this. I feel like I had a really good year, and this is an honor."
> On if he was surprised the Pirates kept him in West Virginia so long: "Yeah, I was kind of surprised. But they would pull me into the office sometimes and tell me so I could understand it. They wanted me to be hungry to win. They wanted me to not try to throw the ball past everyone but to let the hitters get themselves out. It really helped me out."
This is Owens' official page.
