Tabata injury just 'cramping'

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:47 p.m. Tuesday

Outfielder Jose Tabata, one of the Pirates' top three prospects, exited Class AAA Indianapolis' game early last night because of cramping in his leg, director of player development Kyle Stark said. Nothing serious.

@ Demery

Demery,

I wish you would stop doing that.

One of these days I am going to get in trouble for busting out laughing at work like this.....

Anyone else a little concerned that this guy always seems to find his way out of the lineup?

As long as the cramp goes away in less than four hours...

Thank you all for beating me to the punch on this....

With the temps in the east it is a wonder more players aren't having problems.  Miserable here today.

Needed a new thread, the other was getting long.

I'll probably get crushed for saying this, but CRAMPS?

This is baseball....... how did he get cramps from the heat?  This isn't football.... he runs 90 to 180 feet at any given time....

JAL wrote re: Tabata injury just 'cramping'

of course the game thread should be up before this tread gets too long.

How far are linemen running in football when they cramp up?

JAL wrote re: Tabata injury just 'cramping'

Cramps can be caused by dehydration and loss of salt, hence one is more likely to get a cramp in hot weather than in cold weather regardless of how much activity is being engaged in.

BFD wrote re: Tabata injury just 'cramping'

I get that it happens in hot weather, but seems a bit "soft" to me

also,

I concur that lineman rarely run (I was mainly referring to the skilled position players which do more running), but they are "active" more so than a baseball player.  A baseball player may run 90 - 180 feet, then not move for 15 minutes...... just sayin.

BFD -

Despite the opinion of most people who never played the game, the linemen are skilled players who are hitting and running every single down as opposed to those you are discussing who cry foul if they are touched on the line.  Those players run, and then walk back to the huddle (obviously way more taxing than actually doing something). Too often people will  discuss the need for a solid line, but then talk about the linemen as if they are nothing more than huge pieces of furniture.

The heat can cause cramps in the abdominal region in people regardless of the type and level of exertion.  This is not an indication of the softness of the player, but rather perhaps that player's lack of attention to his conditioning.

Tired muscles can also result in cramping.  Doesn't have to be in heat related conditions.

Menkrick

I would say cramps can even happen when a player is attending to his conditioning.  Atmosphere, diet, fluid intake, exertion, overall health, fatigue-level, there are numerous factors that go into it.

Hopefully Jose will be ready to get back at it tonight.

I played both sports, so I get it.....

Just say'in that I see football players cramp up, come out for a couple plays and go back in...... I am suprised that a baseball player sat out an entire game do to cramping.... just my opinion.

Baseball players can't come out of a game and then go back in, as I'm sure you're fully aware.

BFD,

Baseball players can't go back in the game if they are removed, unlike football players. Maybe Jose would have gone back in had the rules allowed it.

Good point.  I agree that there are other factors that go into.  The most recent example that I remember was Chris Duffy being hospitalized for be dehydrated when in Pittsburgh.

After seeing Tabata one might mistake him for a football player.Maybe he might be more susceptible because of his build. Also it might be because he is still getting in shape after the injury. In any case NBFD.

Why make a big deal out of a cramp anyway? We had a 2nd basemen who couldn't play after getting out of a cab.Brian Urlacher missed a game when he hurt his coughing.

@BFD....he didn't sit out the entire game...they pulled him in the 5th inning.

Right.  And Mario Lemieux was out for weeks after trying to tie his skates.  Please people.  It's a friggin' cramp.
