Pirates claim Meloan off waivers

By Dejan Kovacevic | 3:21 p.m. Wednesday

DENVER -- The Pirates have claimed Class AAA reliever Jon Meloan off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Meloan, 25, is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-hander who has made seven major league appearances, none this season. In 35 appearances split between Columbus and Durham, he had a 5.02 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 27 walks.

This is his official page.

The Pirates' 40-man roster already was full, but a space easily could be cleared by placing reliever Tyler Yates -- out for the year -- on the 60-day disabled list rather than the 15-day.

4:08 p.m.: The Pirates make the claim official, also announcing that Yates has, in fact, been moved to the 60-day.

4:10 p.m.: The team also announced the signing of another international prospect, 19-year-old right-handed pitcher Jarryd Sullivan out of Australia.

The stats here are mixed up.  It's 5.52 in 25 appearances with Columbus, 3.38 in 10 appearances with Durham, 5.02 in 35 appearances overall.

Meloan was claimed off waivers from their 40 man roster, but will not need to show No rating in 2009 due to already appearing in the majors.

His Strikeout rating is 99 with 8.7 K/9IP. His control rating is 22 with a career BB/9IP of 4.1 in the minors. but jumping to 8.7 BB/9IP in the short stint in the majors.

Seems like a strikeout guy who needs to gain control. Sounds like Evan Meek JR - 6 ft 3 225 lbs. Maybe the FO thinks they can reclaim him like they did Meek.

He is a RH relief Pitcher and not Left-handed.

Another low risk high reward type of move from NH.......

Man does he like his pitchers to be 6-3.  Once highly rated.  If he can get to 80% of what Meek has done it will be will worth it.

jnn - Apparently there are differing stats on there on him,

I do see that milb has the same stats that you reference.

web.minorleaguebaseball.com/.../stats.jsp

But the other two websites I referenced have what Dejan referenced.

It'll have to be sorted out.

BayArea - good point. And don't forget about Morton. The only times he has won are when he has allow ZERO runs. He has 4 starts with either a loss or ND when he allowed 1,2 or 3 runs.

jnn wrote re: Pirates claim Meloan off waivers

cmh - He was only with Durham for 1 month.  There's almost 0 chance he made 25 appearances in 1 month.  The baseball reference link you posted actually has the correct stats, only the baseball cube one doesn't.

@cmh:

Sorry to be dense but could you please explain :

Meloan was claimed off waivers from their 40 man roster, but will not need to show No rating in 2009 due to already appearing in the majors.

especially the but will not need to show No rating in 2009. I could not figure it out from the last thread or the repeat on this one.

Is that a typo or a term I am not familiar with?

Thanks

Thanks Mark, I was going to repost, but I figured the people in the Duke/Ohlie discussion are mostly regulars around here who keep an eye on threads after folks march.

Basic point to those too busy or lazy to check:  Duke and Ohlendorf have gotten embarassingly small run support in their losses.  Like, around 1-1.5 runs per game.  If this team could consistently score some runs, those two would be at 12 wins each, or so.  And Morton would have much prettier numbers as well, as Mark points out.

And, you know, as an unintended by product, we'd actually win more games.  Could be neat.

Interesting concept, BAB!  Good Pitching + Effective Hitting = More Runs with a corollary effect of potentially more wins.

Perhaps we will see NH implement this in the future... : )

@Danno (from prev thread):  It'll be interesting to see if Hall clears waivers.  Maybe he just needs the "change of scenery" routine?  But, .201/.265?  And 4 errors in very limited playing time.

He has to be the most-shopped player in MLB over the last two seasons.

I'll repost my thought again from the morning links b/c I didn't see any response and I'm interested in what others think of my idea:

Shut Zach and Paul down for the rest of the season (or beginning of September) and let McCutchen and Lincoln (or another AAA starter) join the rotation (maybe Donnie or Ascanio instead of Lincoln).

It would save their arms from having to compete in meaningless games, and also gives us a chance to look at Danny McCutchen (who has been really good at AAA) for a period of more than 1 or 2 starts, as well as Lincoln, Donnie, or Jose Ascanio.

It seems like when our guys get to that year where they exceed their career inning totals by a bunch, they don't fare well the next season (or in Ian's case, the next two).

I don't think Paul or Zach is in danger or surpassing previous career highs in IP, but why waste them on meaningless games from here on out.  Get rested, get healthy (Paul's apparently had some minor nagging injuries all year, although he says he's fine), and come back next year ready to anchor the PBC's staff.

I'd rather trademark "Core Player".

Speaking of which (what a segue!) who, at this point, are our "core players"?  Do we have any?

@WDI...Roberto:  I don't like it, because that WOULD be completely unfair to the fans and to the team.  It screams surrender rather than defeat.

Maz & G-man,

That really isn't equitable punishment IMO.

Youkilis misses 5 games.

Porcello really only misses 1.

Sissy boy pitchers get all the breaks.

JAL wrote re: Pirates claim Meloan off waivers

why didn't I

Two problems with the idea

Neither McCutchen nor Lincoln are on the 40 man roster so they would have to added and someone removed

second is that you want your starters to pitch and learn .  Duke's good Sept. last season was a prelude to his good season this year.

I know what you mean. I realize there's no perfectly equitable way to match suspensions for pitchers and position players. But I have always felt pitchers who get suspended should sit for at least twice the number of games. It's a start.

Sorry, when I was pasting from the previous thread, something

Essentially the missed part was that he was the Dodgers #8 prospect in 2008, but there is no rating in 2009 since he already had some major league appearances.

Cajun Thunder wrote re: Pirates claim Meloan off waivers

NH would not have been familiar with Meloan from his time in Cleveland...because Meloan was in the Dodgers organization until early in the 2008 season...when the Blake trade was made.
