Sanchez's knee has trades on hold; player makes counter-offer to team

By Dejan Kovacevic | 3:17 p.m. Wednesday

Any trade involving Freddy Sanchez is on hold because of his lingering left knee issue.

The Pirates have had intensive talks with the San Francisco Giants about Sanchez, but no firm deal was in place at any point. Other teams remain interested in Sanchez and in touch with the Pirates.

Sanchez's knee was examined with an MRI late Monday night, with the Giants' medical staff supervising, and the Pirates believe the matter to be minor. They are letting interested parties take a look at the MRI, too.

Still, no one is ruling out a return. Sanchez was successful in contacting the Pirates yesterday afternoon, and a new three-year proposal was made by the player to the team. The Pirates are not ruling out further talks to keep Sanchez.

From an earlier thread

And "Sanchez was successful in contacting the Pirates"  what do they have one of those automatic answering machines too?  If you want tickets press 1 now, if you want to discuss a contract extension press 2 now, if you want to talk to a human being, good luck..

Just another thought from a clueless being, but..

Clement is out of minor league options after this year.  One of my concerns with Opies trades is that alot of what he picks up either has to sink or swim, Milledge, Moss, Hanson, LaRoche now Clement will not get another chance to develop in the minors, next year they either stay with the ML club or get lost via waivers.  Not a heck of a lot of flexibility.

The FO states that they can fix newly acquired players problems, well, why can't we fix our own players problems?

Exactly what is our track record regarding developing talent??

Obviously this offer was made prior to Wilson being dealt.  Will Freddie pull his offer now that his double play partner is gone?

Re-posted from an earlier thread so that a certain poster can see it:

@ Ron Burgandy: I'm astounded by your comments on DK.  Never, for once, have I read ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING in the PG, be it Pirates, Penguins, otherwise, written by DK that shows even a modicum of bias.  How DARE you question DK's credibility.

And, on another note, it doesn't matter if DK was the media member to break the news to Wilson or not.  The fact that a media member knew before Wilson goes toward the lack-of-class argument.

Interesting.  Out of the two players, I was convinced that Freddie would be the guy to go - if for no other reason that the Pirates do have someone who can actually play 2nd base and because he hits for a higher average.

@bizrow,

Are you sure about Clement not having an option next year? He and Steve Pearce were purchased from the AAA teams pretty much the same day in 2007, and Pearce still has an option next year. I would think Clement does too, but I don't know for sure.

This year there was notable improvement in defense and pitching, in both cases this was fixing our own players' problems.

People seem to think we had a roster full of elite players to trade. "So-and-so was an all-star." Because every team gets one. We are getting the best returns that can be had for players that not much of anybody wants - mainly Dave Littlefield's players - who've been losers of 95 every year like clockwork. Those are not elite players. We are not going to get elite players in return. What we are getting is possibilities of elite players. At least some of them will be if NH is a better evaluator than Littlefield. If not, he will be fired, too.

D Flash02,

I too find it very disturbing that the Pirate organization thought so little of Jack Wilson that they let someone else tell him he was dealt. It is also sad that this happened on the road. MLB should schedule the Pirates at home every year the week before the trade dead line so players can say goodbye.

It is very common these days for a player to find out about a trade from the media. They are often leaked by a source on one or the other team before approved by the Commissioner's office. Especially with the team away. I do hope that someone has talked to Wilson, thanked him for his service, and wished him the best. That seems to be the protocol now.

Wilson turned down his decent offer because Sanchez didn't get something workable. That said, I very much doubt that the Pirates are going to be interested in this counter-offer unless they just can't come up with a decent trade. Always nice to have options, though.

POH

Me neither! And is it my computer, or the server that is being EXTREMELY slow? And boy I sure hope we resign Freddy but I doubt it, MLB Trade Rumors said that the Giants are "deffiantely getting Freddy Sanchez". Also Langosch is reporting that a deal is in place but the Giants want to check out his knee first, but since DK reported no deal is in place I'll go with his word that there isn't.

It wouldn't matter if they signed Freddy, they'd deal him next year anyways.

I think the only two guys I'd be genuinely upset to see leave are Duke and Doumit.

Maholm - A bit sad, but I don't think he'll go.  If he would, the offer would have to be outstanding.

Grabow - I'd be sad, but he'll be a FA after this year.

Capps - If you could get a good return, I might even be happy.  He hasn't been the same this year...

And that wraps up the Pre-Huntington starters right (other than Gorzo, but I think he'll be given another shot)?

I agree with you Pirates only take counter-offer if Sanchez is not traded, but if he doesn't get traded I think they'll take it.
