Pirates offer Wilson, Sanchez extensions

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:15 a.m. Friday

The Pirates have approached shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Freddy Sanchez about multiyear contract extensions, putting on hold, for now, the possibility that either will be traded by Major League Baseball's July 31 deadline.

But the clock is ticking.

If the parties are to agree on extensions, they will need to do so far enough in advance of the deadline so that, if the Pirates decide no agreement is possible, they still can pursue a trade for one or both. That likely means something would need to get done within the next week to 10 days.

And there is a catch, one unusual in professional sports: If one player does not sign, the other probably will not, either. Wilson and Sanchez are best friends to the point of being virtually inseparable, on and off the infield dirt.

Listen, I want it to happen. The Pirates don't have legitimate replacements at any level for either of those guys. But I'll be honest when I say that I don't see it happening unless Jack and Freddy take something in the $5-7 million a year range . . . just don't see the Pirates spending more that that.

Great move by the Pirates.  Next year would have been absolutely ugly without those two...our pitcher's ERA's would have soared.  I don't suspect we would have gotten that much in trade for either of them to offset the lost defense from trading them.  Maybe there is some hope that management knows what they're doing and winning baseball is just a couple seasons away.

I love it. Keeping that solid D up the middle as our studs come up could be a beautiful thing. Another good move by the FO, my only big complaint to date is the Bay trade.

If they can pull this off it would be a great move. Every team needs a couple of veteran guys to lead, and if the Bucs are going to compete anytime in the next couple of years it's best to keep these two around.

I know there are some people who will be unhappy, given both Jack Wilson's and Freddy Sanchez' ages.

However, with a young pitching staff, you need to have solid defense up the middle behind them.  This accomplishes that with two veteran guys that play hard and are solid citizens and leaders.  I like it for that reason.

For God's sake, the pitchers go out to the mound knowing that the lineup is not a bunch of heavy hitters.  How much more pressure do you want to put on them?

I hope I'm wrong but I doubt NH and co. will offer fair contract offers in regard to extensions for both players.

With Sanchez and Wilson not accepting the team's offer, they will look like the bad guys and the public will accept the trades.  I believe that is NH thinking!

If the players do sign extensions, I hope they get "no trade clauses" in there contract.

I wish the Pirates offered extensions to Jason Bay and Nate McLouth before they were traded.  I wouldn't of felt so bad about the trades.  (OPPS!  McLouth did sign his  (core of the future) contract and got rewarded with a trade.

Strickly a PR move, just like the Santo player who won't sign with Pittsburgh either.

i might be wrong....but getting these players under longer contacts increases their trade value.  I think that's the motive on Neil's side.  Personally, I don't think they'll offer Jack enough money and this will NOT happen.  Next step, hope

that they can at least one decent middle infielder before next season starts.
