Three items related to the Jack Wilson/Freddy Sanchez article from this morning, partly in response to issues raised in the comments:
> Money has been discussed only loosely, in terms of parameters. I would not expect to hear details in this regard until there are -- or are not -- actual signings. None of the three sides will want to do this in public. So far, the feel I get is that money will not be as much of an issue as years. But it is way early.
> The concept of this being a "PR move" was raised quite a bit overnight and this morning, as I can see. It might or might not be that. All I can say directly here is that there was no announcement and, in fact, the Pirates were anything but eager to have these talks -- especially given the time limit -- out in the public. And, for the record, the source from whom I gleaned the most knowledge on this matter came very much from the outside.
> The issue of the trade clause was raised by one of the three sides in this matter, suggesting it could come up in negotiations. Hence, the wording in the article. As a reader reminds in the comments (and I should have thought of this myself when writing this last night), Wilson is on the cusp of being a 10-and-5 player, meaning he will have 10 years in the majors next year, the past five or more with the same team. As such, his labor rights would allow him to veto any trade.
I plan to be here at the desk for the next half-hour or so if anyone has anything further they want to raise or ask in the comments. This development forced me to come up with something completely new for the Sunday "On the Pirates" feature, so I will be here hashing it out.
UPDATE 12:58 p.m.: Bob Smizik weighs in on the matter.
