Pirates sign Lithuanian, Australian

By Dejan Kovacevic | 5:09 p.m. Saturday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Pirates signed two more international players, including their first European amateur.

The latter is pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas, 16, of Lithuania. A 6-foot-3, 170-pound right-hander, he will begin his professional career this fall in the Florida Instructional League.

The other is catcher Dylan Child, 18, from Australia. A 6-foot-1, 181-pounder who recently converted from shortstop, Child will begin his career at Major League Baseball's academy in Australia later this year.

The Pirates' international total for signings is 11.

I think that Russel is sitting Moss to save him facing a lefty. Moss makes progress and then tends to regress when lefties frustrate him with outside  breaking balls.

I said Moss would sit earlier, Deadline, not knowing who would pitch tonite (lefty/righty?).  JR saw that power display by BM in the 9th last nite (foul high and deep over the flag pole and then a screamer deep into right-center stands) and sez to Gary, "man, we gotta sit Brendon tomorrow. Can't have him showing up Young like that.  Gotta give DY his chances to compete. Can't let one guy have an unfaif advantage!"  This guy's diamond philosophy is questionable at best.  Love to hear Varsho's take on some of his moves.  While two drives deep in one AB does not a slugger make, it does show a spark not heretofore displayed and Moss' leather is far superior.  My prediction based on two previous examples this year of JR sitting "hot" or awakened bats.  Maybe another Casey Stengel in the making?

The Pirates are still failing to sign that guy who would create real excitement and grab the headlines for weeks.  No, not Sano, but that extraordinary Penquin.  No, not that Pittsburgh right-winger (a conservative hockey player) but that very talented penquin from the Antarctic who specializes in winter ball.  It's said he slides with the best of them, waddles to the plate, and has a pot belly just like our guys in the Bigs.  Best of all, he comes cheap and will double at games as a mascot (when not playing winter ball, of course).  No extra charge.

The Australia guys surprise me most. (DK mentioned another Australian already in Bradenton). I didn't even think Australians HAD baseball in their country. I am pretty well acquainted with Australia norms. They love their football (soccer). It's hard to imagine a young Australian boy aspiring to become anything other than a professional footballer.

I can see why DK had a good time in Bradenton though, it must be really cool to talk baseball with so many different internationals. I imagine the Aussies are fun to hang out with. I love how they talk (just like that lizard on TV).

Soccer's at best 4th in Australia, behind rugby, cricket, and Aussie Rules football, and possibly behind basketball as well.

Is this not their 10th international signing?

The Bucs first ever European signing is not doing so hot.  Daan Cornelissen is hitting .176, but he can must be pretty fast, 6-7 on steals.

Dylan Child is already playing in the MLB academy, hitting .216.  He must have some power, because he is only one of 6 players with a HR.

Both were teammates until Cornelissen was traded.

Sounds like these new signings can become part of the Pirates 21st-25th consecutive losing seasons by the time they are ready.

Maybe we should sign a woman too (this is assuming that there is someone of the female persuation that would actually want to play for us).

Hey Rook,

My husband says there's a woman who goes to Fantasy Camp every year with her dad and she's a great sport.  You might've heard Blass refer to her.

I'm at the point that I wouldn't care of the Pirates signed someone who was transgendered if  he / she could hit above .300 consistently, hit about 35-40 HR and drive in a 100 every year and able to field.

You know - someone like Albert Pujols.  I'm not suggesting that Albert Pujols is transgendered, but I wouldn't care of he was if he were wearing a Pirate uniform.

I wouldn't care if they signed the Dalai Lama if he could bring peace to the hearts and minds of Pirate fans in the form of a 100 mph fastball and a wicked curve.

I wouldn't care either. You could teach a woman to throw knuckleballs and if she turns out good, then with all the positive attention the club will get we could hold her for a ransom bounty of another teams 3rd best over 30 "prospect".
