Coonelly: No deal with fourth-rounder

By Dejan Kovacevic | 6:43 p.m. Friday

PHILADELPHIA -- Frank Coonelly, the Pirates' president, today rejected a report by ESPN's Peter Gammons that his team has "essentially completed a deal" with fourth-round pick Zackry Dodson, except that Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has "refused to sign off" because the bonus is too high above the recommended slot.

When Coonelly worked for Selig before taking his current job, one of his tasks was to advise teams on draft bonuses.

"The commissioner does not have authority to reject any agreement with a drafted player on the basis that the bonus is over slot," Coonelly said. "We understand what Dodson views as his value, but we have reached no agreement with him, tentative or otherwise."

I wish they did have an agreement with him, tentative or otherwise. I would really like to see some of those high school arms signed. Alas, I think we will have to wait close to the deadline for any of them.

For drafted players who wait until the deadline of 8/17 to sign, they have little or no time to actually play this year.

Bradenton - season ends 8/31

State College - season ends 9/6

West Virginia - season ends 9/7

Well at least it was not said that they will not try to sign him.  I would like for them to get him in the fold, if he gets to play this year or not.  CA P you are correct that it does hurt his progress.

PAMT

At least post something that makes sense.  What does have not reached a deal with more than a month left to do something have to do with management ability?  Nothing.  Some teams have yet signed their 1st round pick.  Doesn't mean they will not reach a deal with him.

Once again Peter Gammons proves why he is the least believable of all baseball rumor mongers.

Even the Redsox fans know better than to take anything he says to the bank.

Good evening inmates near and far. JAL, you do great work for DK and all of us.  Don't give the jerk the attention, that's what he wants.

Thought crossed my mind, have the Pirates had the highest player turnover in the first half of the season? I've lost track, how many players have come and gone so far? Go Bucs.

Wasn't there a report a week or so ago that the Commish's office was reviewing the deals for Dodson and Baker? I thought Dejan had reported that, but perhaps I read it elsewhere.

Dodson was a reach in the 4th round, I'd hope we wouldn't offer a lot over slot. Save that money for the real prospects that we drafted starting in the 6th.

If the Pirates were serious about this draft, and not just being cheap (and I think they were serious) then there are three picks to watch. Zackry Dodson is the first, Zachary Von Rosenberg is the second, and Billy Cain is the third. All three are going to command well-above-slot signing bonuses, perhaps even 7-figures.

If the Pirates get at least two of the three then this will have been a good draft, and I'll be delighted with the pick of Sanchez in the first round. If they don't get at least two then this will have been an average draft at best, and evidence that they were being cheap.

Just off the top of my head I know the Mets and Nats have have used a lot of players.  The nats replaced most of the pen one day .  Not sure who has the most.

I'm not really sure why Coonelly needed to make a statement regarding this considering that there was never any indication that Gammons was even referring to the Pirates. The quote is just that it's "a small market, Central Division team that hasn't done very well for years", and the information he gives about the draftee seems to point to it referring to the Royals.

Thank you--the old prof in me can't resist trying to eliminate ignorance sometimes. :)

@Wonka: No statement was issued. I asked Coonelly a question, and he responded.

If ESPN sought not to seek such rebuttals to its report, then ESPN should have made clear the team to which it was referring rather than casting a general cloud over two or more teams.

JAL -

>>can't resist trying to eliminate ignorance sometimes.<<

There's ignorance meaning lacking knowledge. And there's ignorance meaning "jerk." You and help with the first but have no hope on eliminating the latter. People like that are feeding their egos by posting something in a blog comment they know will be read because they have nothing worthwhile to say that could ever be published anywhere else.

Thanks Dejan, for asking the question ESPN should have

Way to go DK.

Crasnick and Buster Olney are the only ESPN experts that I trust. Gammons says a lot of stuff trying to get something that will stick. Mush mouth.   It must have been a slow day on his usual Redsox, Yankees, Manny beat.

Go Frank C. Go!!!
