Indian pitchers make pro debut

By Dejan Kovacevic | 2:48 p.m. Saturday

MIAMI -- Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh, the Pirates' Indian-born pitchers, made their professional debuts this afternoon for Bradenton of the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, each working an inning of relief against the New York Yankees' affiliate at McKechnie Field.

Patel, the right-hander, pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout, and needed just nine pitches, seven of which were strikes.

Singh, the left-hander, allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout. He needed 20 pitches.

So apparently in 1 year you can go from never having touched a baseball to pitching a 1-2-3 inning in a professional game.  Who knew?

if you throw 90+ MPH in rookie level GCL you can!

Woot.. good for the both of them! I wonder what they were thinking the whole time? Must have been something.

Go Rinku and Dinesh! I'd figure it to be a big enough news deal that we'd be able to see them bringing a few ....

Hey, I just realized: It's the Fourth of July, so ...

DUKE HAS HIS FLUTE!

Chances are that these guys will be nothing more than a blip in the radar down the road, but for all the ridicule the Bucs took, I would love to see at least one of them make it.

If the Yankees had done it, it would have been some innovative thing.

We need to get up to Alaska and find an eskimo throwing a snowball in the 90s and sign him too. (lol)

Wow! Rinku gave up a run on two hits in one inning? That translates to an ERA of 9.00.

I guess that left him Singh-ing the blues.

When did the Pirates sign pitchers from India?

I suppose all the Moss lovers are pulling their hair out. I have to admit when I see Young in right that I hope all the balls are hit to left & center. But he does have a good bat.

Moss doers seem to be heating up, and I bet he'll get in the game at some point tonight.

Glad that JR is as enamored with Gar Jones as I am.

I like 'Gar' Jones, it sounds so Pirate-like. Garrrrrrrr!

It's gonna be a tough night here in Plum Boro with all the fireworks around the neighborhood. My poor cat (named "Goose") is a nervous wreck. I really feel for her and all the other animals this time of year. She's had to endure two different celebrations already this year, the Steelers win & the Pens win. It's been a tough year for her already.

Bay -

You're welcome for the chuckles. Consider it my repayment for that great pic you sent of me and Capn. I've been trying to come up with a weird nickname for myself so there could be a Capn & Tenille joke. But I got nothing.

Believe me, I find NOTHING about the government to be funny. But you could argue most stuff about the government is laughable.

I seriously doubt that we'll ever see those two guys mowing down batters at PNC Park, but it sure seems like they understand competitive sports, and that's reassuring.  What you do don't matter all that much if your team ain't winnin'.

Three cheers for Rinku and Dinesh!

IF YOU BLINK YOU MIGHT MISS RINKU!

THE BUCCOS AND DINESH...THEY MESH!

I like the signing of these guys.  India has a "middle" class larger than the population of the US and these guys are front page (at least in the sports section) news there.  This is good for them, good for the Pirates, and good for baseball.

I'd like to see the Pirates open a Dominican style baseball academy or 3 in India.  Like the Dominican, India has loads of poor people desperate to do anything they can to better their lives.  Give the better poor athletes something to aim for, plus an education and proper nutrition to properly grow, ... and we may have a new source of talent.  If we get there first we can select the best of the best with near zero competition. And until some of them actually are successful in the majors, we can sign them to low cost/low risk contracts.   I think these guys were given $50,000 signing bonuses, maybe less.  People are talking about $5 million for Sano.  At $50,000 a pop, you could sign 100 of these guys for $5 million.  That's 4 full teams worth.  We could start a pro minor league in India and control the rights to ALL or most of the players in the league.  Something like 5% of guys that play pro baseball

OK, so maybe sounds a bit crazy, but it is creative/crazy ideas like this that could turn the Pirates around and keep them strong for years.

@Batavia

The best part about your comment is that Chris Aure of the GCL Bucs is from North Pole HS in Alaska. And touches 90mph on his fastball.

Something like 5 to 10% of guys that play pro baseball make it to the majors.  Even if half or a third of that % can make it from guys signed in India it would be a good investment.
