UPDATE 12:29 p.m.: Kind of a quiet morning, with players dispersed, lots of tired looks. ... Only noteworthy element is that Eric Hinske will start in right rather than the presumed choice, Brandon Moss, mostly because he has seen Zack Greinke in the American League more than anyone. All part of John Russell's plan to load up as much as possible against one of baseball's best. ... Paul Maholm's spirits clearly are picked up by his start last night. Taking the sinker away from a sinkerballer is pretty rough, and he got it back, according to those who know this stuff best, by about the third or fourth inning last night. ... Nyjer Morgan seems particularly bemused by the report of Washington's interest but not to the point of distraction. "I'm not worried about it. It's not going to happen. I know it." He did not elaborate.
2:03 p.m.: Stuff from Neal Huntington's weekly media gathering: Ryan Doumit's target for a return is the first series after the All-Star break, Huntington said, though that is subject to change. ... Tyler Yates will resume throwing tomorrow in Bradenton. ... Phil Dumatrait pitched a side session there yesterday and will have another of 50 pitches Tuesday. ... The Pirates are "very close" to signing their third- and fifth-round picks. Most of the rest of the top 10 will be "tough." ... About right field, particularly pushing Steve Pearce into a position where he seldom will play, apparently: "He hasn't played a lot of right field, and we've got a lot of people who can do the job better out there right now. Plus, Adam is doing what Adam does, which is heat up in the second half, so there isn't going to be much time out there, either. We felt Steve was the best choice when we made our move with Craig Monroe. We'll see how it plays out."
3:31 p.m.: Rain delay. Came right after Andy LaRoche's RBI triple to the base of the wall in right against Greinke that cut Kansas City's lead to 3-1.
4:07 p.m.: The tarp is finally coming off, even though it stopped raining a while ago.
4:13 p.m.: The game will resume at 4:30 p.m., official word.
