The Pirates today agreed to terms with their first-round draft pick, Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez, on a signing bonus believed to be in the range of $2.5 million.
Sanchez, as he had assured the team before his selection at No. 4 overall, was not difficult to sign. The three-day draft ended yesterday, and the signing deadline is Aug. 17.
He will report to the team's extended spring training program in Bradenton, Fla., immediately, then report to Class A West Virginia in 10 days.
There will be an introductory news conference for Sanchez at 5:30 p.m. at PNC Park.
UPDATE 7:02 p.m.: Couple quotes from the news conference. ... Sanchez: "I'm so fortunate to be here. I can't wait to get going, to play in this beautiful ballpark. It's all surreal. Ten days ago, I never would have thought this would be possible." Neither did many others, given that most national publications rated Sanchez 25th or lower on their draft boards. I asked if that bothered him. "I never really give myself too much credit. I never worry about what other people write. I just look at myself and what I can do. I would have been surprised if I was taken in the first round. That's just who I am." ... Sanchez also gave an unsolicited shout-out to the hockey club: "I know everybody's going to be watching the Penguins, so I want to send Sid the Kid and his boys some good luck." ... Neal Huntington: "Above and beyond Tony's abilities are his leadership traits, the kind championship teams are built around."
