Neil Walker, the Pirates' first-round draft pick in 2004, will miss 3-5 weeks because of a sprained ligament in his left knee, director of player development Kyle Stark said today.
Walker, 23, was batting .239 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs for Class AAA Indianapolis when the knee and his pinky finger were injured during a slide in a June 2 game. No surgery will be required for either.
Another of the Pirates' top prospects, outfielder Jose Tabata, returned for Class AA Altoona this afternoon after missing six weeks to a strained hamstring, but he exited after two at-bats when that hamstring cramped. He is day to day.
Also today, the Pirates acquired veteran outfielder Chris Snelling from the San Diego Padres for future considerations and assigned him to Indianapolis.
