Morning links: A messy, mobile desk

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:40 a.m. Thursday

CHICAGO -- On the final day of this trip, thought I would take a snap shot of my messy, mobile desk at Wrigley ...

To the left of the laptop, one can see a venti cinnamon dolce latte purchased from across the street, my PDA, iPod, headphones, and the audio recorder plugged into the side port there. To the right is the notebook, scorebook with alternating blue and red pens (red is for guys reaching base safely), wireless mouse, city-skyline mousepad, daily game notes from both teams and, most important, the emergency sandwich in case the game goes really long and I am left without food.

If the game ends in nine, I can wrap the sandwich and eat it on the flight home tonight.

(No, you cannot see Cracker Jacks under the sandwich. That would be unhealthy.)

Linkage to the general coverage ...

> The game story is here, and it focuses on all the fine Zach Duke pitching the Pirates are wasting.

> Audio of Duke.

> The box score.

> The Notebook is here, with more on Matt Capps' status and Freddy Sanchez sitting during a tear.

> Reminder: Q&A is out at 8 a.m. today, with much on Ian Snell.

And from other realms ...

> From MLB.com, video highlights from yesterday.

> Final word on the Cubs from the Chicago Sun-Times on the Cubs.

Baywatch,

(From yesterday's game thread) "And we have to let Nyjer be Popeye! Did y'all check out how Nyj, jumped up and did a little "Yeah!" safe sign real quick before swaggering back to the dugout ... Nyjer is Popeye Incarnate!"

I like it! It suits him. I imagine his steady is lot nicer looking than Olive Oil. But especially when I see Nyjer with a wad a chaw in his pooch, from now on I'll envision that it's spinach. (Though the long pants he went with today is more Popeye-ish, he does need to get back to his vintage high stirrups look, though. That look kind of has his stamp all over it.)

So, with food laying about the booth, here and there, do things sometimes go missing? With food left by itself, I'm a "finders keepers" kind of guy, myself. Any kind of "press box" etiquette you don't dare violate? Perhaps a single pastry on a paper plate clearly belongs to someone. But let me spy a pink box of donuts, and it's "GANG WAY" when I'm nearby!

Could the true meaning behind the Sanchez benching be that trade talks are in the wind? JR did look pretty good on the JW sitting though, as Velasquez had a good day at the plate. Man that Zambrano is a hothead.......

DK (or anyone with a functioning knowledge of our farm clubs)

Re: Lincoln-- I know you said he needed to work on his changeup down in AA, has he been doing that at all doing this scoreless streak? If so, is it only a matter of time before he's at AAA? Would it be good progression if he's pitching well at AAA by the end of the season? Thanks.

"It just kept expanding"

No, Delwyn, if anything, the zone shrunk when you walked on that full count in the 9th. That was the same pitch he struck out on two times already. Yeesh. That and the botched DP in the first...Well, let's hope he puts this one behind him.

Good morning inmates near and far. Well time to eat a little crow here. Last post I pointed out that the Mets were the walking wounded. They are; but also they are the first place walking wounded.  I assume with Reyes on the 15 day DL, he won't be playing on 6/4 when I next attend.  Too bad, some players are worth the price of admission no matter what uniform they wear.  Does anyone think there is a Pirates player who fits that description in other cities? If not now, who would have been the last one? Astros come in with a 7 game loss streak. Told you folks in st they would finish last.

Go Bucs.

Also, did you make that sandwich or buy it.  It looks like you made it. If so, it looks like you are getting maximum use out of the kitchenette in your hotel room

A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

As more people join this  community a number of questions arise.  Here are some clarifications.

1) Many of us who post here treat this as a discussion forum, not as a traditional blog.  Dejan's post sets the table but we respond to each other more than we respond to specifics of Dejan's post.

2) We always start the day with two threads--morning links and other stuff.  Morning links is primarily baseball discussion and Other Stuff is non baseball.

3) When some posts "OS" they are referring to the "Other Stuff" thread.

4)  Throughout the day, as stories break, Dejan will upload a new thread.  When you see the term "ants marching"  that simply means a new thread has been posted and most of the posters move to the new thread and start posting there.   Going to a new thread helps keep things flowing as we often have over 100 or even 200 posts on the original thread.

5) Instructions for uploading an avatar can be found by clicking my name, BK's name, or Mad's name.  We all have the instructions on our announcements page.  Many find avatars make following the posts easier.

6)  Sign in w/ Nurse Cratchet for your straight jacket, meds, and room assignment

7)  As Dejan reminded us the other day, this thread is for baseball talk and the OS is for other topics

8)  Please read the 'guide to commenting' before you post" A link to the guide to commenting on the blog is located on the left near the top of the page in the section labeled  "Authors"

9) Do not post entire articles from other sources. - It is an act of illegal copyright infringement.   Just post links to the story

I surely left something out but hopefully covered the basics

DK,

The Cracker Jacks might be healthier than that WHITE bread sandwich. White bread has like, zero redeeming qualities. Switch to Wheat man.

No soup (or sandwich) for you!!

Morning fellow mates

Might be a quiet day in here?

re- Astros on 7 game losing streak.

Great, then they are due to turn things around, remember the Gunners hidden vigorish...

Do we stay here for the day?  THe Q&A is posted.  Interestingly enough, regarding the draft, DK kinda confirmed that we may go bargain basement in first round to have the $$ to sign Sano, same thing Keith Law says.

Dejan, here are some important notes about your desk.

1.  The Cinnamon Dolce Latte is in fact awesome, however, make sure you first suck off the whipped cream without the lid.  Then feel free to put the lid on.  Much better that way.

2.  Consider the Blackberry Storm.  It's iTunes compatible so you can eliminate the iPod giving yourself one less thing to carry around.  The new version of the Storm is due out in September.  It does require one to like the touch screen though.

3. How long did your sandwich sit unwrapped before you ate it?  Just asking. And what is on that sandwich (rhetorical)?

4.  Is that milk in a Cubs cup?  I guess you really are objective.

5.  I couldn't tell for a long time what that thing was to the upper left of the Starbucks cup.  It looked like a head sitting on your desk then I realized it was attached to a person.

I watched the Indianapolis game last night and the good news is Andrew McCutchen is READY!  he went 3-4 single , double and HR. He had a steal and threw a runner out at the plate. He was clearly the best player on the field.

The bad news is Indy doesnt have much else, Bixler 2 throwing errors 3 strike outs. This Jackson kid the reliever, i was underwhelmed, he has a good fastball but no movement on his pitches, Gwinnett solved him pretty quick and he even got in the way of Pearce when he was trying to throw home. Pearce is a role player as is Walker, Salazar and Jones.

DK...Thanks for sharing...I truly love the behind the scenes stuff. I'm weird that way.  Considering the amount of room, or lack thereof, I don't think it's an overly messy area.  And I know messy.  *grin*

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who prefers headphones to ear buds.

Crackerjacks are one of the better snack foods, actually.  So you're good.  ;-)

It's TIME for ...

The Bay Watch - Only ONE MONTH from today, Mrs. Bay and I are on our way, to that grand city far away ... yepper, you got it: Pittsburgh, Pee Ay!

Bay Watch on Batting - Lesson No. 1 learned from our rubber game with the Cubs yesterday ... You can't hit the ball if you don't take the bat off your shoulders, DELWYN! Don't come to the park on hallucinogens ... LSD deceives you into thinking the ump will give YOU the pitch off the black.

Bay Watch on Base Running - It was Nyjer, not Zambrano, who should have been the focus of all the home plate hoopla yesterday. Check out the way he jumped up and made that little "Yeah!" safe sign with his arms, after the ump made the right call ... then SWAGGERED back to the dugout.

DMac wrote re: Morning links: A messy, mobile desk

Nate had a problem with a few of those called strikes too.  Delwyn just took more of them.

LarryZ wrote re: Morning links: A messy, mobile desk

Wow, didn't realize that Pedro Alvarez current 37 RBI in 160 AB would project to be close to 150 RBI over an injury free 640 AB full season. Though I know the minors stop play early September.

Nonetheless, looking good!

Hello inmates...

I see it is a very slow day today.

Young should know by now that it is on him to learn the ump's strike zone. They're all a little different and you can't let the bat rest on your shoulders when you have two strikes.

Some random responses to the above about the "desk:"

> My wife has a Mac. Can't stand it, simply because the mouse moves the cursor painfully slowly. And there was no good reason to put the maximize/minimize buttons on the left side of each window.

> I usually do wheat bread. The Cubs had none.

> No whipped cream on the latte.

> The only priority with the PDA is the keyboard. That is how I type lineups and other news -- like the Machado trade last night from the airport -- for you on the blog. The Motorola Q has the best keyboard of any phone I have ever seen.

> Sandwich had turkey and cheddar. And I ate it before Zambrano lost his mind. Regretted that later, too, when I had to get on the plane without food and we sat there for an hour while the engine was ominously "tested."

> Of course, it's a Cubs cup. Just like they have Astros cups in Houston, etc.

> The random head in the top left is one of Chicago's AP guys in the front row.

Leave me alone now, lunatics. I'm off today.

>>Do the ants march to the Q&A threads now?<<

Yes. A little while back, DK noted that we did not seem to migrate upward to the Q&A nor Chat threads. Occasionally, this resulted in huge comment totals in the previous thread and thus slowed down the refresh/loading time when people clicked into the comments portion. So, we have been moving upward to the newest thread pretty universally.
