Doumit cleared to begin rehab

By Dejan Kovacevic | 2:20 p.m. Thursday

Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit has been cleared to resume baseball-type rehabilitation immediately, after a CT scan taken this morning at Allegheny General Hospital showed good healing in his fractured wrist.

The scaphoid bone needed to show sufficient healing before Doumit could resume activities involving the wrist. He still will wear the cast for a short period but could be throwing as early as the rest of the week. His timetable for a full return to the Pirates was expected to be mid-June if all went well with the scan, as it did.

Any confirmation of the rumored sighting of Plenty of Hope speeding across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania riding her wheely office chair and shouting "ATTABABY"?  ;-)

Congratulations, Ryan. We really need you back. Sounds like he could be playing by the time we all assemble for the Baywatch visit to Pittsburgh.

That's great news!

Well start calling all of the members of the G20 and get them to the ballpark on Sept 24th and 25th.  There should be a huge number of folks visiting Pittsburgh for the first time during that week.  I am already imagining what traffic will be like after that 1235pm game with all of the road closures, security precautions, rush hour traffic, etc.  Not to mention all of those that will be out in the streets protesting.  It cant be as bad as it was in London, let's hope.    should be interesting.

Go Bucs!

Would be nice to have him for the series against Detroit, if not it'll be June 23rd before we see him at home.   That's a nice long homestand against some tough opponents/pitching staffs.

Hi, everyone.  Busy morning so I'm late - but I'm fairly early on this thread.  Very good news on Ryan - happy to hear it.  Let's hope the Bucs have a decent record when he's back in, so he can help put them over the top - or towards the top - or improve?

Since I logged in now, is anyone in the PGH area going to Bowling with the Bucs Sunday night?

Take it easy Mr Doumit, don't push yourself too hard, there is plenty of season left and the PBC needs you

I watched the Indianapolis game last night and the good news is Andrew McCutchen is READY!  he went 3-4 single , double and HR. He had a steal and threw a runner out at the plate. He was clearly the best player on the field.

The bad news is Indy doesnt have much else, Bixler 2 throwing errors 3 strike outs. This Jackson kid the reliever, i was underwhelmed, he has a good fastball but no movement on his pitches, Gwinnett solved him pretty quick and he even got in the way of Pearce when he was trying to throw home. Pearce is a role player as is Walker, Salazar and Jones.

I am adding to an original post, first i reiterate Andrew is ready for the "Show" he was a complete player last night at the plate, on the basepaths and in the field.  I admit there was one hit to deep center he could have caught but it looked like he pulled up because he was close to the wall, understandable.

As it relates to things he has to work on from managements perspective, to quote the great "CURLY HOWARD" are you tryin to give me the DOUBLE TALK? That is a load of excrament. I cant think of one player on our squad that doesnt have something to work on.

Bunting?  there is not one good bunter on this squad, Andrew would be the first one on this team to do it well this year or for my memory a very long time.

Management really wants to ensure an extra full year of arbitration control which will be guaranteed as of monday i believe and then and only then will  you see those issues dissapear.

This is exactly the kind of news that we needed. We have been blessed with good news on the injury front lately with Matt's elbow being relatively undamaged, and now Ryan on schedule to return in just a few more weeks.

PoH will be shouting “ATTABABY” while doing a swan dive from the top of her desk with this news.

Mac

I am with you on Andrew, I think it is time, he has true ball player speed, he uses it well most of the time, he is only 22 and will definitely get better, I think the Pirates need to get into the trade market.

Realistically, I believe that McCutchen will be up here after the trade deadline, I believe that room will be available after that.

He probably will be the right fielder on this team after Adam is gone, I think Moss will probably go to first base and I think they are hooked on Morgan in left field, because they think he is fast, I don't think anyone is fast if they don't know where or when to go and they have to make up their mind first.

He also ends up sliding into 2nd or 3rd a lot because he spends too much time admiring what he hit instead of putting his head down and taking off from home plate, that is not just him however to be fair, too many ballplayers these days spend most of their time between home and first admiring where they hit the ball instead of running full speed, another lost fundamental.

Don't like to pick on Morgan, I really like the guy, but I have to tell it like it is.

Bizrow wrote re: Doumit cleared to begin rehab

@Macsinthebox, - re - McCutcheon and bunting

Working on bunting is also curly speak for "well, we want to control him for as much time as possible and not start his arbitration years till 2013, so we have to make some lame excuse up, we hope you will swallow it hook, line and sinker"

I am still a bit worried though when he does get here, neither he nor Nyjmo have prototypical corner outfield power, to say the least.

leadoff i am wit you 100% on both guys, another Andrew point i saw him round 1st heading for 2nd "OH MY GOD"  He was the fastest guy i have ever seen round first, all he has to do is hit it towards the GAP and he's a guaranteed double waiting to happen.

BIZ, i share your concern with the potential lack of power, but i will tell you Andrew has 20 hr potential, believe it  i saw him hit a shot last night, all management has to do is let the kid drive the ball, dont make him into a slap hitter, NYJMO he aint.

Indy getting their heads handed to them today...down 8-0 in the 6th. Cutch is 0-3, Pearce and Walker 0-2. The minor detail to that is that the pitcher in all those at bats was Tom Glavine.

And...as far as arbitration eligibility goes...any time after July 2nd...bringing Cutch up CANNOT affect his "clock" unless they are wanting to delay things another full year. For a "Super Two" the requirement is two full seasons and more than half of a third...before it's even possible to be a "Super Two". We cross that boundary on July 2nd. If you take the latest date for a Super Two in the last 3 years...we passed it on May 19th. That's why you've seen David Price and Matt Weiters get called up this week.

Well, if we bring Cutch up, have to clear a 40 man roster space, drop someone from the 25 or make a trade to clear the spot, and we have to get him in the line-up, so who sits?  What do we do?  Trade Ad La, move Moss to 1st?

Bizrow - I'm not for trading Adam this year. If you move someone to put Cutch in center, to me it would make sense to move Nate to left - if he's going to live out his PBC career there, may as well start now.

I think, and I'm going to get stoned for this, you trade Nyjer. He's got to have value to people - he's doing a great job for us. The admin is not going to trade Moss - they believe they got what they wanted in that trade by getting Moss. I'm not an advocate of trading him either, I'm just pretending to think like them.

I am not trading Adam either, but what I would do is consider him tradeable if someone wants to give me what I want, much like Bay, I am ready willing and able to keep him the rest of this year.

Look at it this way, if after June he starts to hit like crazy, he will have more value in the off season than he has now and we don't really have a bonified first basemen available anyhow.

Plenty of Hope wrote re: Doumit cleared to begin rehab

That I did watch, when you brought it up before, I can't say that I know for sure that it robs him of power since power is generated from the arms and through the hips, might affect his balance some though, I don't have a batting coach's mentality, but I would have thought that Long would have noticed it, sometimes seeing things and correcting them are very difficult, you remember Clemente and the way he swung a bat was truly unconventional, but he got the job done.

Arriba -- With the present line-up I agree.  With a legit #4 hitter, Nate would be scoring more runs and those leadoff home runs have a way of taking the starch out of the opposing pitcher.

BTW -- Has anybody noticed that Andy LaRoche is now the OBP leader among the regulars.  Even now the idea of a batting order of Nyjer, Andy, Nate, Freddy, Ryan, Moss, Adam, and Jack intrigues me...

FormerSoxFan wrote re: Doumit cleared to begin rehab

It's funny Hadar, I was just thinking today about how it was time to move Andy up in the lineup.  He hasn't shown the power you want for the #3 guy, but at #2, yeah, that could work.  But again, maybe you need one more power bat in the lineup for that to really work.

JHadar wrote re: Doumit cleared to begin rehab

I've got the Q as well! GREAT phone.

My two cents:  why not try Moss at first in a game or two now if we're thinking about putting him there after a possible Adam trade?  I know that the problem is compounded because taking Adam out of the lineup removes power, so JR likes to put Monroe in there in his place to supplement the lineup's big sticks...as well as the L/R issues...but if there's any chance Moss goes to first in the long run, lets see it.

IMHO the lineup that makes the most sense long-term:

1. Cutch, LF

2. Freddy, 2B

3. Nate, CF

4. Ryan, C

5. Adam, 1B

6. Moss, RF

7. Andy, 3B

8. Jack, SS

That leaves out NyjMo.  Whom I love, and whom I remain totally supportive of. I just don't see how we can possibly run him out there, given the other personnel coming up (namely McCutchen, of course).  Then you move Adam for Pedro in a few years. Tabata replaces Moss. Friday or one of these other prospects takes over SS. Negrych/Ford at 2B.  Promising.

Pretty much agree with that lineup BAB, except McCutchen is a natural CF.  Nate would move to left.

But in reality, if we can get a decent return for Adam this summer, you do it, and move Moss to 1B for the time being, maybe.

I WAS hiding under the bed. But then I checked Google Earth again and saw PoH leaving the giant mitt, jump in her car and head south toward Richmond. I decided to come out from under the bed and book a flight to Gitmo. Much safer there. Waterboarding is a day at the beach compared to a big squeaky flick on the forehead from PoH.

Here's the thing on Adam. I would still keep him and plan to take the compensation pick if the team was contending for playoffs on 7/31 OR if they really felt they could/would sign him to an extension. But if the team is no better than flirting with .500, I would have to make the trade. But that's just me.

Article from the Pirates site is supposedly about pitching depth, but actually has quite a bit about "weeding out" players that don't "buy into the organization's philosophies, and therefore, aren't a fit."

Blunt stuff and if Hostage were here, he would be all over it.  Somebody is bound to wonder how Snell is doing along those lines, too.

JH , after watching Jackson pitch last night , he looked a lot like Van Benschoten and reading that article i am disgusted we are looking for B+ -C-

Easy on Jackson. It was one outing. Don't you think that's an awfully short evaluation to use before piling on the guy and then all over the organization? It was one outing from a guy who has been with the organization for a week, and a guy we gave up nothing to get. Give him a chance to at least get to know the coaches and his catcher.

G-Man - replacing Nu Ho with POH

My friend, haven't you ever heard about matter and anti-matter?  A combination of both and the world will end, or explode or whatever

I agree with POH, Mc Cutch and Nyjmo are two of the same type of players at this time, anyways, earlier we talked about Mc Cutch hittiing 20 dingers, but that will take time.

Now that being said, POH, I respectfully disagree with you regarding trading Ad La, IMO he's not going to sign, we can try Moss there and bring up maybe Jones and see what we have.  IMO Nyjmo would be more valuable trade wise in the off season, if he keeps it up, one could argue he's for real.

We'd have to find a new candidate for the bus, but, thats not bad

MLB's latest mock draft says we get Crow, I could live with that.

One more thing, one bad outing, talking about Jackson here, does not make a season, he's older but I;m willing to give him a chance for a bit, a no lose situation, got him for nada

Talent-wise, we saw them at around the same level as some of the guys we had, but our guys were running out of option years," said Huntington, who added that both Hacker and Jackson were scouted extensively last summer when the Pirates were looking at the Yankees as a potential Trade Deadline partner. "We don't want to be filling our system with 32-year-old Minor League players, but if there is a guy who is an established player who we think can potentially help our Major League club, we'll take him."

You just saw "Angels & Demons" at the movies this weekend, didn't you?

So far as the objections to guys who hit a lot of solo homeruns in the leadoff spot: I forget which brother, but one of Matty Alou's brothers used to routinely hit 20 solo dingers in the leadoff spot for the Braves, I think. So it's not a completely new idea. It could work with Cutch or Nate in that spot. Jeez, when you think about how often 2009 Pirates load the bases and get ZERO runs, I would gladly take home runs from that postion in the order.

BayAreaBuccaneer wrote re: Doumit cleared to begin rehab

Felipe Alou is the Alou that played for Atlanta. He hit over 15 homers just once for them...31 in 1966. I am assuming he is the one you meant, though, because he is a) the only Alou brother from that generation to hit over 20 homers and b) led the league in at bats twice while with Atlanta, making me think he was leading off.

Barry Bonds led off and homered a lot. Rickey Henderson. Alfonso Soriano. Its not a bad thing to have a leadoff hitter with pop.

Re Angels & Demons and PoH and Nu Hos:

Actually, I was referring to the anti-matter part. (Really, it's in the movie.) But I see the logic in that being a possible title for a PoH vs. Hostage face-off. Obviously, PoH would be the angel. Probably the first time those two words have been in the same sentence since PoH made her first communion. =:-0

(I am so gonna die for that.)

So Nu Ho is played by Brad Pitt and POH by Angela Joline?

I think its good that DK gets Robin Williams, an Oscar winner, I'm sure he's not looking over us anymore, but IMO, DK is priceless, the pictures, the banter, the personal touch, but most of all the reporting, tremendous is a weak word, and one can see he loves it,

Nate batting leadoff?  What a novel idea.  It would help us since the leadoff person mainly leads of the in first inning.  After that it's a crapshoot. If we pitch hit for the pitcher and the guy gets on then we have power to help drive him in as well.  Nate has not done alot lately in the 3 hole and that could be because Doumit is still out of the line-up.  He may be pressing too much for it as well.

I know I'm late to the party and apparently several beers behind, but all this comparison with Felipe Alou and Ricky Henderson kind of ignores the fact (and I haven't checked this) that I have to believe those teams had other home run hitters.   Nate has the most home runs now and at the end of the year will be at least #2 if AdLa's still here and #1 if he isn't.  Maybe put AdLa at leadoff, he has an easier time with homers with no one on base.  I would guess Nate's problems in the 3 hole probably are somewhat due to being followed by a .225 hitter who strikes out and pops out a lot.  I know, I know, put it to bed already. . .
