Pirates vs. Marlins, 4-20-09: Doumit out with wrist injury

By Dejan Kovacevic | 3:05 p.m. Monday

Four hours to first pitch ...

Game: Pirates vs. Florida Marlins, 7:05 p.m., PNC Park.

Pitching: RHP Ross Ohlendorf vs. LHP Andrew Miller.

First-pitch forecast: Rain, 50 degrees. Some doubts about this one.

TV, radio: FSN Pittsburgh, WPGB-FM (104.7).

Pirates' lineup:

  1. Morgan, LF
  2. Sanchez, 2B
  3. McLouth, CF
  4. Monroe, RF
  5. Adam LaRoche, 1B
  6. Andy LaRoche, 3B
  7. Wilson, SS
  8. Jaramillo, C
  9. Ohlendorf, P

Marlins' lineup:

  1. Bonifacio, 3B
  2. Baker, C
  3. Ramirez, SS
  4. Cantu, 1B
  5. Uggla, 2B
  6. Hermida, LF
  7. Ross, RF
  8. Maybin, CF
  9. Miller, P

UPDATE 3:20 p.m.: Ryan Doumit is out of the lineup, but it is not yet known if that is injury-related. He came out of the game late yesterday, but so did three other regulars because of the lopsided score. ... The promise to keep Craig Monroe is active, with his batting cleanup against the left-hander Miller.

3:41 p.m.: Doumit's right wrist is injured, and he is having an MRI this afternoon at Allegheny General Hospital. He hurt it in the game yesterday on a swing in his second at-bat. X-rays did not show a fracture. Manager John Russell said Doumit came to PNC today complaining of soreness, adding that Doumit described the injury to him as "more like a pull than a pop." Doumit has no history of wrist trouble. More word is expected later today.

7:05 p.m.: Game will be delayed by only about 10 minutes. Still nothing new on Doumit. And, man alive, there might not be 200 people in the seats for the first pitch.

The live box score can be found here.

If it's injury-related, it wasn't something bothering Doumit enough to not warm up the pitcher in the top of the 9th, while Jaramillo was getting his gear back on.  After he came out, he spent the rest of the game in the dugout.

I hope they break the rainy-game streak today.  Ugh.

DMac, i know you and others dont share my take that Ryan should play another position than Catcher, before the berating starts i believe if injured he will have missed his 228th game to injury since 04 but i will have 2 check that.

Bottom line he has been hurt a lot during his young career, catching takes a heck of a toll on your body.

If he stays healthy we miss his much needed bat out of the lineup minimum 20 games.

Though improved is he really that good a catcher? im not sold.

Can someone enlighten me why it's that imperative that this guy has to catch?

Doumit is an amazingly valuable catcher because not many catchers can hit as good as he can.  Plus he's a switch hitter.  In another position though, he is just average offensively.  Maybe just slightly above average.

Its kind of the same thing with Walker.  If he was still a catcher, he would still be a highly thought of prospect.  But as a corner infielder, his lack of offensive skills is apparent.  He has historically been well below average in all offensive categories for a corner fielder.

Daryl - I envision you drinking about 10 Red Bulls before posting your comments.  Every time i view your post, I read with with such energy.  I wish I had your vigor...

mac - Doumit's highest value to the team is at catcher.  The drop off from him to JJ is a wide gap.  Now, Doumit has played 1B and RF, but the guys there are not nearly the drop in production as in catcher.  We have a great commodity in Doumit so long as we can surround him with other talent and pitching.

Of course, that could also mean that we could get great value for him in a trade - ha!  I'm not ready to think about that one just yet...

From last thread--good question on how to get pitching.  Lincoln could still develop--takes at least a year back and sometimes more to get back to your norm from TJ surgery.

If Maholm keeps pitching like he has been they certainly must think about keeping him.

To get a top pitcher in trade you have to have riches somewhere--say CF.

mac...No berating -- sorry if it comes across that way.  I just think that he's earned his job as the starting catcher.  That's what he was drafted as and where he feels he belongs, though he's said he'll play anywhere they put him.

Now, this whole injury thing.  I echo PoH's sentiment.

He didn't come right out though...I know he had at least1 more at-bat, and I know it was him warming the pitcher up before Jaramillo came back out.  Okay, none of that means much...I'm trying to find positive aspects that would make this a minor injury.

I agree.

(Pause to hear tear in lining of universe.)

Also, I believe that's what he wants, though he would stay on the field in any position as opposed to not playing, from his words, not mine.

POH - I don't want to see it happen, but was just throwing that out there.

My favorite player when I was 14 or 15 was Tony Pena as I played catcher through high school and legion ball.  It was a sad day when they traded him, but it worked out in the long run.

Again, I'm not proposing that they trade him, but they don't have many chips to get real returns.  I'm also still peeved about the ARam trade that netted us Bobby 'Freakin' Hill, Jose Hernandez, and some guy named Bruback.  I'm not confident in any trade we make until one happens that actually helps our team.  The jury is still out on last year's trades...

You get pitching through the draft, nobody is giving you a pitcher the caliber of Maholm unless you give them people you don't want to give up.

As I stated in an earlier post the 8 out of the top ten picks in this years draft are pitchers, we get one if we want on, the problem is the 2 that are not pitcher are top prospects.

The NO 1 pick is Strasberg 100-102 MPH fastball, he may fall to NO 4 because Boras is talking 50 mil for him or waiting out a year, now is you chance, what do you do if you are Neal?

Q - we're good then.

The only upside to me, as a Pirates fan, to trading Doumit is that he be traded to a team where he can experience playing in October. Because he deserves it.

I'm not proposing that they trade him, but they don't have many chips to get real returns.

We do have chips to trade!

Try at least 5 blue chips in the minors and McClouth, Doumit, Maholm and Snell.

Trading anyone of them would bring you talent.

Our holes on this present team are depth at a couple of positions and a couple of pitchers, our holes in the system are catchers, Pitchers and right side infielders. We can't fix them all even with this years draft.

It seems pretty erry Doumit misses his first game this year due to injury the same day Ronny Paulino returns to PNC. NH should call the Orioles and see if they're willing to deal Matt Weiters.

Doumit has to remain at Catcher.

I would rather have Doumit at C for 130 games and Jaramillo at C for 30 games while Moss, Monroe, Hinske, etc play 162 in RF

rather than Doumit in RF for 150 games with Jaramillo and Diaz behind the plate for 162.

I said that we don't have 'many' chips, not 'any' chips.  I would agree that McLouth and Maholm have value.  I would disagree on Snell at the moment.  He's pitched well the past two starts, but he didn't produce last year.  Nobody would give top tier talent for him at this moment.  Now, IF he continues to produce, that MAY change later in the year.  He's not at peak value at this moment.

NuttingHostage wrote re: Pirates vs. Marlins, 4-20-09: Doumit out with wrist injury

JAL,

I just don't see the wisdom in moving Doumit to a position where he as a player is less valuable at and then turning the catching duties over to unproven minor leaguers.

IMO, we already have unproven question marks in LF, RF, and 3B.

The net result in moving Doumit to 1st is a downgrade offensively and defensively at 1st, and question marks at 4 positions (3B, RF, LF, and C) instead of 3 like today.

Macinthebox,

Keep Diaz as Doumit's backup and send Jaramillo back down.

Or god forbid, make Diaz the starter and trade Doumit for a front line hurler.

IMO Doumit is more valuable as a switch-hitting catcher with pop than as a hack of a 1B or RF with an average bat for those positions.

And POH, I don't have any kids for you to make smelly for suggesting that Doumit could be traded.

Also, if our goal is to accumulate young talented prospects to provide the Bucs with a deeper talent pool, then we would not trade some of those prospects.  With that said, i didn't even consider our prospects as 'chips' for possible trades.

JAL,

Maybe they deal McLouth for a couple of starters. - Like trading Todd Ritchie for Kip Wells, Josh Fogg, and Sean Lowe.

I'd have to think the most marketable players they have right now that could bring additional pitching include.....

McLouth and Doumit, because they are signed to affordable, arb lock-up multi-year contracts.

And Adam LaRoche, but to a lessor degree since he is a free agent next year. I don't think Jack would bring much. Probably not Freddy either.

OH, I see what you are saying. - Well if Doumit goes on the DL, it will hurt but at the same time it will give us a better chance to see what we have, or don't have, in Diaz and Jaramillo. - It that were to happen, I'd split the starts right down the middle.

But then again, Neal said the reason Jaramillo got the job over Diaz was because he asked good questions during spring training so who knows what crazy kind of criteria they would use to determine the appropriate course of action.

Jarmillo has not looked good defensively at this level yet, and he doesn't hit very well, he doesn't know the pitchers very well either. I don't know if the Pirates have a veteran catcher they can bring up for a couple of games or not, but Doumit is a huge loss in this series, couple that with the fact we have 2 pitchers going that are our worst starting pitchers, doesn't look good.

Strasburg is not falling to 4. If he does, you take him in a heartbeat. And then you call Boras up and ask where you can back the money truck up to.  He is major league ready RIGHT NOW.  So you sign him for six years, sixty million dollars.  Framework:

$10 Million to sign.

Year 1: $2 Million

Year 2: $3 Million

Year 3: $6 Million

Year 4: $11 Million

Year 5: $13 Million

Year 6: $15 Million

He sells out EVERY start this year.  He is immediately slotted as the #2 behind Maholm this year, and probably your opening day starter after that.  Rotation becomes

Maholm + SS at the top

Duke/Snell as 3 and 4 starters (I like that A LOT better)

One spot for Ohlie/Karstens/DMc/Gorzo/Dumatrait/Barthmaier/Taubenheim/Herrera/Lincoln/Moskos/Singh/Patel/Morris (okay, hopefully some of these guys would supplant Duke/Snell after a while.)

THAT would look mighty fine.

(And, of course, you create buzz and enhance the hopefully growing perception that this is a team on the rise and willing to PAY for winning!)

Hello All -- Just back from the doctor and he informs me that I am healing quite nicely thank you and the problem is that patient is not patient enough.  At this point in the process I am *supposed* to be exhausted, so the prescription is take more pills and deal with.  I like a straightforward professional.

And this injury doesn't look like something Doumit won't get over, let's hope it's day-to-day.

NH -- << catching >> I think a man of your obvious elan could probably handle the heat -- it's those 85 mph curve balls and sliders I'm worried about.  Oh, and don't get into a negativity contest -- just be yourself and outlast him.  Every time he mentions the lineup point out how it's all the front office's fault.  Good strategy there, and don't say I don't have your best interests at heart.

Now which Ohlendorf is going to show up tonight?  It's early, but with Mr. Kerrigan's help I think we're going to be seeing the shiny versions of pitchers 2-4, and possibly 5, too on a more or less regular basis by the end of the season.

There seems to be fans of Ryan that want him playing 1b and it's a position he hasn't played in a couple years,so if he can play 1b why not Neil play C  which he played for 4 years at Pine Richland and 3 years in the minors? We all know he's a quick study.

Looking at radar...any rain that falls at PNC should be before gametime. Basically...if they start the game, they will get it in. Not much rain to the south or west of what's currently falling...and that should be out pretty quick. Otherwise, the closest rain is in extreme western Ohio.

Hello everybody...

So I was watching the Natural on TV last night and I noticed that the final game at the end is the NY Knights (with  symbol that looks like the Yankees) vs Pittsburgh Pirates and Roy Hobbs  (uniform #9) hits the home run to win the game.  Made me think perhaps the director was still upset about the 1960 world series and made the Yankees win...

Regardless, it made me think that they should make a movie about the 1960 WS.  Perfect hollywood ending with the perfect anticlimax when the Yankees come back before Maz wins it with the home run.

If you were casting for this movie, what actors would you choose to play the players?  Jamie Foxx as Roberto?  Brad Pitt as Mickey Mantle?  Any thoughts on who could play Yogi?

there's a reason I picked the Bucs to lose 100...and Doumit's injury is the first hint of it. This organization is not deep at all. NO TEAM goes through a season entirely healthy. Expecting none of your top players to be out for any significant time is unrealistic. I figure Ryan's in a good bit of pain if they've already Xrayed and MRI'd him. Since it's his throwing wrist...probably looking at a roster move in the next day or two if it is anything more than soreness.

Guess we will find out who is the emergency catcher REAL quick.

I know the perils of drafting pitchers. SS is a paradigm-changer though.  I'd give him what he wants.  It would absolutely set the Pirates up in the eyes of the fans, the media, and even agents around baseball, as a team serious about WINNING baseball games. And winning them NOW.  You'll note I backload the deal...obviously that would lead to us trading him if things didn't come together in the first few years.  I just think it is a no-brainer.  If it fails, at least you swung for the fences.

Wb Baywatch.. I hope you enjoyed my minor-league summary.

Daryl- Pedro was AWESOME yesterday.  There are 3 types of fans that go to see the Blue Rocks..  a) fans who go to a game and like the Blue Rocks b) fans who like the Royals and want to watch their future (note Wilmington changed to a Red Sox farm team for a few years, but the Red Sox wouldn't leave players in Wilmington for too long and they stunk)  c) fans of the other team and their parent club.

I counted about 20 pirate caps that came out to see Pedro and I saw two KC royal caps for Moustakas (their Pedro).  Plus, the asylum scared the beejesus out of the Wilmington Mascot when he tried to put the wamma jamma on Jordy Mercer and Pedro.

I'm surprised they didn't cancel tonight due to wet grounds. Did I miss a roster move this weekend? Is Young here from LA? If yes, who was moved out? Lacking anyone better to catch, I'd like to see ryan stay there, if you are going to change his position, does the name Bigio ring a bell? And there is a new stat in the box scores RISP. I assume this is for runners in scoring position? If yes, what is a good ratio for this stat. I've yet to see any over 50%

First batter singles up the middle.

2nd batter hits a hopper over Ohlie's head, Jack comes in and misses the bounce, all hands safe. Jack gets an error for that.  2 on, none out.

3rd batter hits a slow roller to 3rd.  Andy tags the lead-off runner for 1 out.  Still 2 on, 1 down.

Next batter chops a 2-0 pitch that Ohlie fields, throwing to Adam for the 2nd out.  Runners at 2nd and 3rd.

Uggla hits hits one to left, but right at Nyjer for the final out.

No score, Pirates coming to bat.

I agree with any forthcoming criticism of the sacrifice attempt there for the following reasons:

1) Freddy is leading the league in doubles -- a feat he has accomplished over a full season in the past.

2) He's not that great a bunter.

3) He made an out on the first strike thrown by the Marlins' pitcher on the game. After five straight balls. That is an AUTOMATIC take situation.

Nyjer leads off with a walk, then promptly steals 2nd.  No throw was made.

(Nice avi, Maz!  ;-)  )

*sigh* Then Freddy botches a bunt attempt by popping it up.  The pitcher fields it. Nyjer stays at 2nd, 2 away.

Nate coming to the plate.

Nate singles up the middle and Nyjer scores!

WOOHOO!  1-0 Bucs!

Wild Pitch moves Nate to 2nd.

He he he...Nate steals 3rd.

Monroe hits a grounder to the right side, but it's not deep enough to score Nate.  2 away.

Crap.  Adam grounds one to 2B to retire the side.

1-0 Bucs, heading to the 2nd.

I have to agree that the sac bunt attempt made very little sense.  Popping it up made it worse.  If it had worked that would have been OK, but at least Nyjer had the sense to stay close to the base and didn't get doubled off.  His base running is improving perhaps.

Andy opens the inning with a strikeout...but he did get it to a full count...and wasn't very fond of the call.  1 away

(they're saying that Andy took extra BP in the cages AFTER the game yesterday)

Jack hits a chopper to 2nd for the 2nd out.

Nice!  Jaramillo gets a single just under the glove of Ramirez at SS.  1 on, 2 away.

Ohlie hits one back up the middle, but it's fielded by Ramirez who tags Jaramillo out as he heads to 2nd for the final out.

NICE PLAY, ANDY!  Bonifacio bunted towards 3B.   Andy fields it by the mound, bare-hands it and throws on to Adam for the 2nd out.  SWEET!

Nyjer leads of the bottom of the 3rd. He hits a hot-shot to 3rd, but Bonifacio makes a strong throw, beating Nyjer by a half-step.  1 away.

(Quick note...the LaRoche brothers are batting back-to-back in the lineup.  First time that's happened, at least for the Pirates, since the Waner brothers.)

Freddy drops a single to right field.  They try to throw him out.  The throw was offline, but didn't get away far enough for Freddy to advance to 2nd.

He's at 1st, with 1 away.

Nate hits a grounder to SS.  They get Freddy out, but Nate is safe at 1st on a Fielder's Choice.  2 away.

Monroe steps in.  He hits one in the hole at short, but again Ramirez makes a great throw to JUST get Monroe at first.  Monroe's not happy, but I think it was a good call.

Side retired.

his game would be a big win for us for the season.  Even bigger shown on national television.  We need a solid 7 innigs out of Ohlie.  We need to get some clutch hitting and score a few more runs.  I don't see the one run being enough.  Then again sounds like hes really pitching good.  Still at work so can't wait to get home and catch the end of the game.  We win today we can hope for a good game from Karstens if not we have maholm in the series ending game.  Always good to win the first game of a series.  The marlins have been a big come from behind team all year so lets hope we continue getting the pitching and score more runs.

Ramirez leads off for the Fish.  And he lines a single to left.

Cantu skies one to Monroe in RF for the first out.  Runner holds at 1st.

SWEET!  Ramirez takes off on a 2-1 count.  Jaramillo guns him down for the 2nd out.  And the count is 2-2 on the hitter.

And Ohlie strikes out Uggla for the 3rd out!

That's 3 K's for Ohlendorf!

Of course this would happen on a Monday night, when Mrs. BAB isn't home either.  So our perfectly good ESPN HD broadcast is being wasted. I demand they replay the game starting at 7pm PST!

Jack Wilson just stole third.  Is it just me, or do the Pirates not respect John Baker's arm?

Jarmillo is very hard to run on.  With his arm maybe they see about turning him into a pitcher.

BAB...I was only repeating what I heard on the TV broadcast.  And I don't think I said it was the first time this season...I get it sounded that way.  Sorry.

Adam leads off the inning with a double to right!

Andy skies one to right for an out, but Adam is able to tag off and go to 3rd.  ( I was holding my breath though, since Speedy Gonzalez, Adam is NOT.)

1 out, runner on 3rd.

Jack walks, so we have runners at the corners for Jaramillo.

Visit to the mound from the pitching coach.

Wild Pitch...ball gets far enough away for Adam to score!  Jack moves to 2nd.  Yay!  2-0 Pirates!

Next pitch is low and Jack takes off from 2nd...and is SAFE at 3rd with a stolen base!  Go Jack Flash!

Still only 1 away.

Jaramillo sends the 3-1 pitch sharply, but right to Bonifacio who throws on to first for the out.  2 away.

Ohlie grounds out to SS for the last out.

But we do get another run. 2-0 Pirates, heading the 5th.

Not sure why I didn't already know this, but Ohlie's given name: Curtis Ross Ohlendorf.  I don't much care for the name Ross, but if the alternative was to have a pitcher named "Curt" I will absolutely take it.  Also, he's a Princeton Tiger. That can only help him, right?  Backdoor offense, patience, good defense....wait, wrong sport ;-)

Hermida leads off the top of the 5th and he hits one deep to center, but not deep enough...Nate is able to get a bead on it and catches it with a foot on the warning track.  1 away.

Ross hits a roller to 3rd.  Andy to Adam for the 2nd out.

Maybin steps in with 2 away.  And he strikes out to retire the side.  Nice!  4th K for Ohlie!

Nyjer bunts one back to the pitcher for the first out.

Freddy grounds to SS for the 2nd out.

Nate draws a 2-out walk.

(The crowd is sparse, but it's not raining there right now.  A lot of folks may be under the overhangs too.)

Monroe steps in.  And he walks.  2 on, 2 out.

Pitching coach visits the mound.

Adam's up and he goes to a 3-1, then 3-2 count.  And he its a single to left center!  Both Nate and Monroe score!

WOOHOO!  2 RBI's for Adam! 4-0 Bucs!

And there is a break in the action...Pitching change.

Bucs off to good start in this game.  Ohlie looking much better than last outing.  Again, pitching will be the key for the Bucs.

While it's nice to have the Bucs on national TV... how many people are going to see this and say, "Look at those stand - Pittsburgh isn't a baseball town".  There looks to be about 1,500 people there tonight on this dreary day in the Northeast.

Double switch for the Marlins.

Amezaga is in Center and is batting 9th. Now pitching, Logan Kensing and batting in the 8th spot.

Andy's at the plate.

HOLEY MOLEY!  Adam takes off on an 0-2 count and Andy strokes a single through the hole in short!   Runners on the corners, 2 away.

Jack pops one up on the infield an dit looks like he hit that finger wrong.  Side retired.

But the Roche-Coach is rocking tonight!

4-0 Pirates, heading to the 6th.

Amezaga leads off the 6th for the Fish.  And he strikes out, after getting ahead 2-0 in the count.  1 away.

Bonifacio sends a 1-1 pitch to RF...and Monroe barely moves to make the catch.  2 away.

Baker grounds one to 3rd and Andy makes another good play to throw retire the side.

Fish...Nada.  Pirates...4.

Dmac and others - I am really enjoying these running commentaries on the game - beats espn webite, etc hands down. Being in Texas, this is the best possible substitute for not being there or hearing the Pirates' broadcast - in fact, this may be better than the broadcast even if I could get it!

Unlike other years, I have this strange feeling that the Pirates actually have a credible shot at winning any game, no matter who they play. This team may not be of championship caliber, but it is certainly respectable.

DMac wrote re: Pirates vs. Marlins, 4-20-09: Doumit out with wrist injury

Jaramillo leads off the bottom of the 6th with a single to right.

Ohlie comes to the plate and squares to bunt.  Very nice sacrifice!  Jaramillo to 2nd, 1 away.

(Thanks, Demery...l've spent 2 games in the rain already and they lost both...I do better at home, I think  I hope Capn is warm and dry though.)

Nyjer ropes a single to right and Jaramillo moves to 3rd.  Runners at the corners for Freddy.

Sweet!  They call a balk on Kensing and both runners advance!  Jaramillo scores and Nyjer moves to 2nd.

5-0 Pirates, 1 away.

Then there's another wild pitch and Nyjer moves to 3rd.

The next pitch almost gets by the catcher...he really had to reach to grab that one. 3-0 count on Freddy.

And they walk Freddy, to put runners at the corners for Nate.

And KISS IT GOODBYE!  Nate sends the first pitch into the seats!  3-run-bomb!

It goes to the left of the Clemente seats, bounces on the Riverwalk and into the Allegheny.

8-0 Pirates!

Monroe steps in with the bases cleared and only 1 out.  He hits a grounder that goes behind 2nd.  Uggla fields it but momentum carries him away from 1B and Monroe is safe at 1st.

Adam is up....and they walk him!

Andy comes up and isn't very patient this time...he wants in on the act, but grounds to 3rd for a DP.

Side retired, but WOW!

8-0 Pirates!
