Pirates to honor fallen police officers

By Dejan Kovacevic | 5:22 p.m. Thursday

ST. LOUIS -- The Pirates will honor the three fallen Pittsburgh police officers -- Paul Sciullo II, Eric G. Kelly and Stephen J. Mayhle -- with a moment of silence and the playing of taps before the home opener Monday.

The players will wear Pittsburgh Bureau of Police caps in the game, as well as a commemorative patch. The visiting Houston Astros will wear those caps during pregame introductions. All caps will be signed, then auctioned off, with all proceeds benefiting the Pittsburgh Police Fallen Heroes Fund.

There also will be collections at the gates for that fund.

The Post-Gazette's coverage of the procession in Pittsburgh today can be found here.

Very nice gesture.

Class act to honor very deserving men, and support the families that have to live with an unspeakably awful act.  May they only remember the good.

As if I don't get choked up enough on opening day (I really do), this will ensure that I will outright cry.
