BRADENTON, Fla. -- Craig Monroe just homered for the third time against Minnesota this afternoon at McKechnie Field, doubling his spring total to a team-high six.
Monroe's first two went high and well beyond the fence in left, one in the second inning, the next in the third, each off Minnesota starter Scott Baker. The last came in the sixth, a two-run shot to center off Kevin Mulvey's first offering that put the Pirates ahead, 6-1.
Monroe, 30, is a strong candidate for a reserve outfield spot, and getting stronger with each swing: His average is at .333, he has a team-high nine RBIs, and his six home runs have come in just 30 at-bats.
The Pirates' spring record for home runs -- such records began getting kept in 1986 -- was eight, by Craig Wilson in 2005.
UPDATE 3:40 p.m.: The Pirates win, 6-4, with Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit also homering.
