Pirates sign Bootcheck, Bautista

By Dejan Kovacevic | 1:55 p.m. Monday

The Pirates today agreed to terms with six players on minor league contracts and an invitation to the major league portion of spring training: relievers Chris Bootcheck, Denny Bautista and Juan Mateo; infielders Garrett Jones and Andy Phillips; and outfielder Jeff Salazar.

More details to come.

UPDATE 2:49 p.m.: Just a couple things here, in talking to Neal Huntington just now about this group: Bootcheck will be given a chance to compete for the major league pen, as will Bautista, obviously, in being brought back. Oh, and for those wondering about the Bootcheck fiasco from last week, the Pirates were adamant today that, at the time my report was published, they had not actually agreed to terms. So ... whatever.

2:54 p.m.: Just made live links out of all those guys' names up there. It sends you to their Baseball Cube pages for some pretty thorough stats.

Well, the fires are burning in the front office... got some players coming in.

I for one, am glad to see Denny B back in the fold, he reminded me of Marte, before he got his command under control.

Now can we please sign just one decent STARTER to go along with the young men we currently have. Personally, I'd really like to see them go after Sheets. I mean what the heck, they paid that much to a washed up Morris, at least this kid is still throwing smoke!

Kerrigan has a lot of pieces to work with; hopefully he can cobble together a respectable staff out of it all. There are so many pitchers that are question marks looking toward 2009.

Hostage, I am going to order season tickets because of Bootcheck. The phones are probably ringing off the hook.

NuHo-from the earlier thread. I actually just had a can of Spaghettios--with meatballs--last week.  Interesting.

Next signings are coat check, hat check (never see that anymore), biggest question is will Nutting pick up the check?

Still want a splash in FA, or build towards 2011-2012.

Heard Keith Law on radio with Joe Starky over the weekend, he said he was surprised that the PBC has not made more moves towards "rebuilding" such as trading Sanchez/Snell and the like.

No harm, no foul contracts.  Bucs can only win here.

Isn't Jeff Salazar about 50?

Dubers, Jeff S is 28, born in 80, if my math is right

Nice to see a sense of perspective now and then.

If you can manage to bear in mind that these signings are just an attempt to build some AAA depth, which every team tries to do, it's a pretty good group.  Mateo was with Altoona last year and had a big second half after he'd fallen off a cliff with the Cubs due to some shoulder problems.  If he stays healthy he's actually a decent prospect.  Phillips is sort of a poor man's Mientkiewicz who never got a real chance with the Yankees.  Salazar's a pretty good hitter who might be useful if they had some injuries.

Nutting WILL NOT pick up the check so Kerrigan will have to piece it together. Our rotation is like the old 5 and 10, out of the 10 we have competing, maybe we will end up with 5. Look at it this way though, last yr. the starting 5 was set in stone with no competition, Gorzo and Snell cannot be that bad again, can they ?

Pirata13- would you go for seconds on the spagettio's ? I'm sticking with mac-n-cheese

Did Mateo play for the PBC in the past, in the minors, I mean?

Stats link shows Mateo was with Altoona last yr but ended season with AAA Chicago affiliate, not sure what happened but looks like he had good stats with the Curve.

Phillips and Salazar i think are good pick ups for the bench and the 'pen hey Bautista and Bootcheck couldn't do much worse then some of the guys we had last year

Mateo's stats aren't in order.  He started the year with the Cubs, I think in AAA, got sent to AA, then was released.  The Pirates then signed him and he spent the rest of the year at Altoona.  He became a minor league free agent after the season.

Luckydog--probably wouldn't regularly have spaghettios.  I LOVE me some mac-n-cheese, but no more Kraft, I make my own homemade.  It's da bomb...
